Angelica continued to run as fast as she could

Angelica continued to run as fast as she could. Her bare feet thud on the ground and she ignored each time something pierced her skin. She was sure if she looked down she would see the scratches that have begun to bleed from how long she had gone without shoes. Her hair was in a wild knot and some strands were getting in her face as she ran but she only blew out heavy breaths to make the hair get away from her mouth and eyes. She didn't know where she was going, she just knew she had to get away from the horrifying sight of those men from the city torturing her father because he had not given them the money he owed them.

She was tired of having her father come to her with shame in his eyes and have him apologise to her over and over again because he could not give her the safety he had promised her mother that he'd give before she died. She was tired of having to see him go out every night and try and gamble the only money they had left in hopes of getting some back. She knew it was fruitless because that was how they lost everything in the first. People from the village should never gamble with the rich of the city.

The rich already had everything and yet they still want to take and take and take. The more they have the more their greed increases. Angelica was so sick of it.

She just wanted a break from her reality.  A break from her world and so she ran. She ran, she ran, and she ran until she stumbled out of her village and into a small clearing. She didn't seem to realise that the houses and sheds were disappearing and that all that was left were trees and bushes. The grass underneath her gave her aching feet an incredible relief and she couldn't help but wiggle her toes in it.

She slowed her pace and started walking down the clearing, her curiosity piqued by the beauty of nature surrounding her. Her village wasn't really the most luxurious sight to have graced her eyes so she welcomed the new sight with open arms.

As she continued to walk she could hear what seemed to be a stream of water and she fastened her pace, excited to see a river or a lake or whatever it was.

But she hadn't expected to see the body of a small girl perched on a rock and trying to reach down in the water. The young girl was also barefoot but by glancing down at the grass near the rock angelica could see a flashy pair of sandals laying there.

Angelica cautiously walked towards the young girl and then she peered over her shoulder down at the clear water. She could see tiny little fish swimming in the water and she felt a smile climb on her face.

"They're so pretty." She mumbled, having forgotten that she never actually announced her presence to the blond girl and so she really should not have been surprised when the girl screeched and slipped off the rock and into the water.

Angelica froze, not knowing what to do and waited for a few moments until the blond head popped back over the surface of the water and angelica sighed in relief. She had no idea what she would do if the girl did not know how to swim because she also had no idea how to swim and she knew she'd jump anyway to try and save her and then they would both be dead....

"Who-who are you?" The petite girl asked as she cautiously swam away from Angelica.

"My name is Angelica, I'm from the village." Angelica introduced herself. "You don't have to be afraid of me, I was just exploring. I'm sorry if I frightened you."

"What does fri-frighten mean?" The stranger stumbled over the word and Angelica smiled a little. "it means scare. I didn't mean to scare you."

"oh. It's okay! My name is Violet and you didn't scare me I was just shocked you know? because I didn't tell mommy I'm here and I'm all alone even though mommy told me not to go out alone because it's dangerous. but I was bored from the grammar class my tutor was giving me and I saw a few kids playing-and-and." Violet stopped talking and took a deep breath and then she stopped before nervously looking up at Angelica.

"Sorry, I talked too much and that's not allowed but I do that when I'm nervous and I'm gonna do it again if I don't stop talking right now." And with that she clamped her hand against her mouth to stop herself and Angelica couldn't help but giggle at her silly actions.

"I don't know who told you you're not allowed to talk a lot but I think it's okay. But you should really get out of the water now or you might get sick. Or get eaten by...a fish." Angelica said and Violet's eyes widened in panic as she hurriedly swam to where Angelica was and pushed herself out of the water and onto the grass.

"Oh." She mumbled as a shiver passed through her body. "It's cold."

Angelica glanced down at the worn out cardigan she was wearing over her summer dress and she took a few hesitant steps towards Violet and then she bent down so she was crouched next to her. "I can lend you my...sweater if you want. It's not very nice looking though and it might look weird with your pretty dress."

Violet turned her head and smiled brightly at Angelica and for the first time Angelica felt a blush rise to her cheeks at the sight of such a bright and beautiful smile. "That would be so nice of you! And I already look weird so don't worry."

Angelica felt a smile of her own form on her face as she took off her comforting cardigan that she has been wearing for as long as she can remember and helped Violet slip it on. "Wow! It's so soft."

Angelica felt her heart warm up at the sight of Violet melting into her sweater and she couldn't help but sit down on the grass completely and scoot closer to the young girl until her now bare arm was pressed against Violet's warm one.

"Do you.. want to stay here until you dry up and then return home?" She asked shyly as she didn't want to part just yet and Violet eagerly nodded as she too knew she couldn't return home in this state.

And so, the beginning of a beautiful friendship and a heart wrenching love story began that day with the two girls by the stream of water, unknown to all the heartache that was ahead of them.
