Memories of Violet talking about her mother slammed into Angelica one after the other. She remembered when Violet came to their meet-up spot with a red wrist, caused by her mother squeezing it when she was lecturing Violet about not paying attention in her lessons.

Or the time when she found Violet sobbing by the river because her mom humiliated her in front of a dozen guests for not holding a teacup right. The worst memory that Angelica could think of though was the day she found Violet with a throbbing red cheek, slapped by her mother for raising her voice when she felt disrespected.

Violet had been terrified of her mother since that day and she tried not to be rude to not bring any harm to herself and Angelica did her best to comfort her and distract her from her life in the city just like Violet distracted her from her life in the village when they met up.

So Angelica knew that they were stuck in the worse predicament right now, with her mother so close to finding Angelica in her daughter's closet which would bring out her wrath.

She braced herself with a deep breath and pressed her ear to the closet door so she could make out the words that were being exchanged.

"I've just had tea with Daniel's mother and would you explain why she has informed me that you haven't been showing up to your rendezvous as you promised you would?" Violet's mother said and Angelica's brows furrowed in confusion, Daniel?

"C-can we please talk about this later?" Violet asked, terror lacing her tone and Angelica felt her stomach shift in unease hearing Violet sound so terrified.

"No. You will tell me right this instant or you won't  like the consequences." Her mother said and Angelica felt her heart rate accelerate in fear. Oh god, she has no idea what she would do if Violet was hurt right now.

"Mother, I-I don't like Daniel. I don't want to meet him. I don't want th-"

"You don't have a choice, Violet! I don't need your permission to marry you off to that boy because you will marry him."

Marry?

Marriage?

"No! I don't want-"

Angelica gasped as she heard a sharp blow, skin hitting skin and she covered her mouth in shock when she heard Violet whimper in pain. She felt her hand shake with anger and she was about to open the doors of the closet when she felt a thump against it and realized that Violet predicted what she would do and prevented her from coming out.

Angelica bit her lip hard enough to make tears pool in her eyes as she heard Violet gasp out a small sob. "I'm dragging you to their home tomorrow myself and since you're so disobedient I'll make sure to hurry up with the whole process. You don't deserve time to adjust."

"Mom-" Violet doesn't get to say what she wanted because her mother leaves the room, slamming the door behind her and then there was a moment of silence before the doors of the closed slowly opened.

Angelica's tearful gaze clashed with Violet's and when she saw her love's bruised face streak with tears she felt her own tear slip down her cheek.

"I-I'm sorry Angie." Violet cried out as she covered her face with her hands and crouched on the ground, her face shaking into her hands as she sobbed.

"Violet," Angelica whispered sadly as she got out of the closet and down to the floor where she could wrap her arms around the small girl's frame.

"Shhh, please don't cry." She said as she rubbed her hand down her back to ease her shaking. "W-What am I going to do now Angelica? I-I don't want to marry someone else."

Someone else.

"It's okay, we're okay," Angelica said, not knowing what else she could say. "We'll figure it out okay? Now show me your pretty face."

Angelica tilted Violet's face up and leaned closer to press a gentle kiss against her bruised cheek. "I'm sorry she's so horrible to you."

More tears fell from Violet's eyes at the action and the words and Angelica's heart broke for her usual cheerful girl so she couldn't stop the ridiculous proposition from tumbling out of her mouth. "You want to come with me? I'll hide you and we can-we can work something out?"

"I can't." Violet shook her head. "She'll find me. She'll send people everywhere to look for me and I don't want to make you live like that. And how will we manage ourselves? We're only 16."

"Exactly." Angelica breathed out with a hint of fury in her voice. "You're sixteen and she's trying to marry you off."

"It's always like that with most families here, you know this," Violet said as she wiped her face away and stood up, grabbing Angelica's hands to pull her up.

"I know," Angelica said with a deep sigh as she recalled how her own parents got married so young. She hated it and she hoped that soon things will change and 16 won't be the normal age to get married.

"We should sneak you out now. I don't want to be in trouble again." Violet murmured and Angelica frowned when Violet let go of her hands.

"Vi?" Angelica asked, taking a step closer and Violet took one back. "What's wrong?"

"I don't want to hurt you, Angie," Violet said.

"But you're not hurting me," Angelica answered.

"But I will. I'll hurt you and I can't handle that so I think it's better if we just don't see each other anymore." Violet said and Angelica's heart dropped in the pit of her stomach.

"You're hurting me now," Angie whispered as she gently grabbed Violet's face and pressed their foreheads together. "I don't want to not see you anymore. I want you. I need you Vi. We can fix this together, no?"

"We can't," Violet mumbled as she pushed Angelica's hands away. "She'll never let me free. I'll always be trapped here and I don't even think I'll be allowed to sneak away anymore to the lake either way."

"I'll come here, I'll do whatever it takes to see you." Angie insisted.

"Angelica." Violet pushed out, her voice cracking at the name of the only one she has ever loved. "Don't you understand? I have a betrothed. I'm promised to another. He will not let me go. I can't keep seeing you because it'll only hurt us both. It'll hurt me. And I'm tired of being hurt. I'm so tired."

"I-I don't understand," Angelica said, tears now fully steaming down her face. "So what now? I'm supposed to act like you're not the most important person to me? I'm supposed to go on and live my life as if you haven't been the only person on my mind for years now? I'm supposed to forget you? I can't- Violet, I think I lo-"

"Stop." Violet cut her off. "Don't say that. Please don't say it."

"Fine. I won't." Angelica said. "If this is your decision then fine, I'll accept it."

Violet looked up at Angelica and Angelica could see the heartbreak on her face. She could see any light on her love's face completely vanish and she thinks for a moment that perhaps it was the wrong thing to say but what else was she supposed to do now? Continue to beg? She didn't think it would have worked.

"But just know I'll wait. I'll wait for you to come back to me. Even if it's forever, even if it's in another life, I'll wait for you."
