“I’m coming home!” Emily said, making me gasp. I held the phone away from my face and screamed as loud as I could in excitement. Tucker winced from his post on the floor next to me. He had been silent the entire phone call, but refused to leave. Not that I wanted him too, I just thought he would probably get bored while I talked with my long lost best friend.
“Geez, Syd, you nearly blew my ear drums.” He said, flashing me a quick grin. I hadn’t told Emily about tucker; we didn’t get many chances to talk.
“Who’s that?” Emily demanded, and I could picture her face. I dodged the question I would rather tell her in person.
“So when are you coming home?” I asked happily, poking Tucker in the side when he rolled his eyes.
“I’ll be home Monday morning, and I’ll come and see you as soon as possible, which will probably we Tuesday.” She said.
“Now tell me why I heard a male voice on the other end of the line.” She said, refusing to be distracted.
“Oh, uh, that’s Tucker, our new…farm hand.” I said, and Tucker glanced up at me. “Why is he in your room?” she persisted.
“Um…well, because…erm….we’re sort of together.” I said so quickly I doubted she would catch it. Now Emily was the one screaming on the other end of the line. I held the phone away from my ear and winced.
“Oh my gosh, you have a boy friend? When were you going to tell me? What’s he like? Is he nice? Is he hot? I bet he’s hot.”
I had to cut her off.
“You’ll get to meet him when get home. I gotta go, love you, bye.” I said hurriedly, before she sucked me into a three hour phone call.
“Sydney, no, you cant-” I hung the phone up and looked at Tucker, who raised an eye brow.
“She likes to talk.” I said simply, and he nodded, the corners of his mouth twitching. It had been about three days since we told my mom about us, and she still hadn’t let off on the obsessive checking in thing. I would have to talk to her about that if she didn’t relax.
“So your friend is coming home?” he asked, sitting up. I nodded and smiled. “She’ll be home Monday, and you’ll meet her Tuesday.” I said, already picturing it. I still had two days before she arrived.
It was just after noon, and Tucker and I were sitting on the floor of my room while we were supposed to be out working. But I knew via email that Emily would be calling and I refused to miss it. I sighed and stood up. “We better get back out there before my mom realizes we’re missing.”
I got a little nervous when I my mom standing in the door way of the barn, obviously waiting for us.
“Crap.” I muttered, smacking Tucker in the stomach when he chuckled. “Hey mom, sorry, Emily called.” I said as we approached. She nodded, already smiling.
“I have decided that you two may have the rest of the day off. I can handle the rest of the chores by myself, and don’t think I haven’t noticed how annoyed you are with my clinginess.”
We both stared at her, shocked. She waved her hands.
“Go on, before I change my mind. Go swimming at the river so you’re out of my way.” She said, turning her back on us. I turned around and grinned up at Tucker.
