I tipped my head back to soak up the last of the summer sun. the weather would be getting colder soon, and I would have many more opportunities to enjoy it. I was sitting on the fallen tree that stretched over the brook, my feet dangling in the water.
I looked over at Tucker and smiled. The doctors told him he wasn’t allowed in the water yet, but we could still sit on the tree.
“Look who’s the one with the sun burn now.” I said, gently touching his shoulder, where it was getting slightly red. He chuckled.
“I wouldn’t be talking.” He said, stroking my cheek with his thumb, making it sting a little. I gasped. “Did I get one on my face?” I asked, touching it gently. He laughed. “Just a little.”
I scowled and looked away, but he put an arm around my neck and forced me to look at him. I smiled and pressed my lips to his, kissing him hungrily. He kissed me back, smiling a little against my lips.
“Get a room!”
“Yeah, quit the PDA!”
We broke apart and I leaned around to Tucker to look at the bank, where Emily and Jake were sitting side by side. I shot them the finger and they laughed. Emily said something to Jake, and he laughed harder, making me roll my eyes. Emily loved the water, but she decided to stay on land with Jake, although the week before she had managed to get him to at least step in the water.
I couldn’t help but smile at them. They weren’t “together’ so to speak, but they were basically inseparable, and I guessed it was only a matter of time before they were together. My mother had taken Jake on as yet another probation worker, like Tucker, and he and Emily talked on the phone for hours every night.
“They’re so damn cute.” I said, giggling. Tucker chuckled.
“Yeah, freakin’ adorable.”
I smiled at him and leaned my head on his shoulder, looking out over the running water as the sun started to set, the faint sound of Emily and Jake talking, Zippy and Plumb munching on grass. Tucker kissed the top of my head and I sighed.
“I love you.” He murmured. I smiled.
“I love me too.”
“Way to ruin the moment.”
“You know I love you.”
He grinned crookedly down at me. “I know.”
