Gabriel and Nathalie already finished their work and they had the whole day left for themselves, so they decided to bake something together, to help past the time.
They walked into the kitchen, putting their aprons on and Nathalie tied the back of Gabriel’s apron and he did the same for her. They then washed and dried their hands, feeling really excited as this would be their first-time baking as a couple.
Nathalie and Gabriel were going to bake a Flourless, Spiced Hot Chocolate Cake.
“We need ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, plus more for dusting, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon cayenne, ¼ teaspoon salt, 8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, 10 tablespoons of unsalted butter, plus more for pan, 6 large eggs, ½ cup of dark brown sugar, ½ cup granulated sugar and Chocolate shavings” Nathalie read out the long list of ingredients and Gabriel brought everything she asked for out of the kitchen cupboards.
Nathalie preheated the oven to 350°F with a rack in the middle position, and Gabriel lightly coated the bottom and sides of a 9-inch spring form baking pan with butter.
They whisked the cocoa powder, cinnamon, cayenne, and salt in a small bowl.
They placed chocolate chips and butter in a medium bowl and they stirred, until it was smooth and well combined.
Meanwhile, Nathalie beated egg yolks and brown sugar with an electric mixer, until smooth and creamy. Gabriel added cocoa powder into the mixture and they took turns beating it,
They then added the melted chocolate and they stirred it, until it was well combined.
Gabriel beated the egg whites in a clean, large bowl with an electric mixer, until foamy. Nathalie gradually add the granulated sugar, beating until the mixture was very glossy.
They gently folded a quarter of egg white mixture into the chocolate mixture and they gently folded the remaining egg white mixture, being careful not to deflate it, until just incorporated and no white streaks remaining.
They poured the batter into a prepared pan and they smoothed the top, baking, until the cake was puffed and slightly cracked around edges.
They removed the spring form collar from pan, Lightly dusting the cake with cocoa powder. They topped the cake with chocolate shavings.
It took them 3 hours to make it and Gabriel and Nathalie sat on the barstools around the breakfast bar, enjoying their scrumptious cake, that they had made.
