Chapter X
Elliot: Oh, hey! Didn't realize you also wore glasses.
Heidi: They're annoying to deal with when I'm at school, so I wear contacts instead.
She said as she pushed her glasses back.
Alex: You going out somewhere?
Alex pointed at the messenger bag that she had slung across her shoulder.
Heidi: Not necessarily. What were you guys up to? I take it that big fire blast was from you guys? I heard you recently unlocked fire affinity Alex.
Alex: Yeah, that was us. We ran into a butterfly Geist and it suddenly just flew off in this direction, so we decided to chase after it to see where it was going. We had to fight another Geist that we happened to bump into while chasing the main one.
Elliot nodded.
Elliot: But when we were done with the fight, we noticed that they were gone.
Heidi's eyes seemed to light up upon hearing this.
Heidi: Oh! Perfect timing, this is the perfect chance to begin my experiment!
She was fidgeting with excitement.
Heidi: Ok. Elliot?
She pointed to the light post that could be seen just around the bend of the corner.
Heidi: Go stand by that light post for a few moments.
Elliot: Uh, ok?
As Elliot began walking towards the light post, Heidi handed Alex a small paper slip, about the size of an average store receipt. The paper slip had some strange patterns on it, written in pure black ink. Alex looked at the patterns but could not make heads or tails of it for some reason.
Alex: What's this?
Heidi: Ok, so. A while back, I was talking with Mr. Torrez, hoping that maybe he could give me some tips. He mentioned that it might help me to know that it is possible to infuse real world objects with Anima; and if you infuse it with enough energy, it becomes reinforced. With that little info bit in my mind, I thought to myself: "Could I do the same with a Rune?" Following this principle, I did a few tests. I learned that it is indeed possible to inscribe objects with Runes as well!
Alex saw her getting more excited. Clearly, she had been waiting to show someone her tests.
Heidi: Through these tests, I also learned that depending on the toughness of the material, it would be easier or harder to write the Runes into the object. If the object is tough, like a rock for example, writing the Rune into it is a lot harder and takes a lot of time. But if the object is softer or fragile, like say, that slip of paper; then it is much easier to write the Rune. However, the tougher materials keep Anima energy for a lot longer, while the softer materials will lose their charge rather quickly.
Heidi pointed at the patterns on the slip of paper she handed to Alex.
Heidi: The ink originally glowed a light blue hue and after a while it turned black. This means that the Rune itself is inscribed onto the paper but it has no Anima to actually take effect. Alex, focus your Anima into the paper slip I just gave you. Just don't do too much in one go or the paper will overload and go up in flames.
Alex looked at the paper and began to focus. Slowly, the black ink began to change hue and then it began to glow.
Heidi: Great! Now that its glowing, it means you can use it no problem.
