"There, I think that will help you out," Claire put a heating pad on my stomach, that she already plugged in. "Just remember not to overheat yourself."
"Thank you, Claire."
I could hardly choke out anything to say to her the entire time she helped me. I was grateful, despite it all, but I was just overwhelmed in the end.
Of course, I also felt anxious about being in a stranger's home, asking for help. On top of that, it was my boyfriend's grandparents. "So much for a good first impression."
Mushroom jumped on the bed and sat against me, making Claire smile, "Did you know that dogs can sense pregnancy?"
"No," I smiled back. "But, that's pretty cool."
Claire took a deep breath and looked at me after watching Mushroom, "I wish we could have met on better terms, but I can tell you're a very nice girl. I'm sorry you got wrapped in our family business. If you don't mind me asking, where are your parents? Do they know where you are?"
Now it was my turn to take a deep breath, but I let it out in a sigh, "My dad died and my mom abandoned me. I have a sister but she doesn't... care. So, no, I don't really have any family."
"Distant relatives? Uncles or aunts? Grandparents? Anything?"
I slowly shook my head, staring at the wall the bed was pressed against, "I never met any of them, my mother never allowed it when I was younger."
She put her hand to my knee for a moment, "I'm very sorry to hear that. I know I'm just some old lady, but don't hesitate to call if you need help or... advice. Being a mom as an adult is scary, so I can't say I can imagine it as a teenager. Now you need to rest-- you need it. You've overworked your body too hard."
I nodded, "Thank you."
"We decided that you all are going to stay with us—"
I cut her off, sitting up, "What? But you could be charged for helping Sean and Daniel!"
"I-I know, but it's already been decided. Now, your fever isn't getting better-- lay back down. Do you need anything at all?"
"Just water, please. Could you send Sean up too?"
"Of course."
She walked out as I looked up at the ceiling. I felt hot and I wanted to remove the heating pad, but it was the only think keeping the pain at bay. I wanted to close my eyes for eternity, but I knew that wasn't exactly an option.
I also knew that I needed to get my thoughts out— perhaps talking about it to an un-opinionated object could help, because nothing else had helped thus far.
After I set my camera on my stand, I laid back down and faced it, "It's day thirty-three of having this camera. We're at Sean's grandparents house— finally."
I shifted a little, tucking the heating pad down, "The're nice, but I haven't seen Sean since I got here. I know it's stupid, but I wish he were here with me right now. I just-- I wonldn't have made it this far without him and--"
I took a deep breath and slowly blew it out like Claire suggested when I got cramps, "These cramps fucking blow. Claire said it's the ligaments in my stomach stretching as my uterus expands. It sounded like a sex ed class she she told me and it made me uncomfortable as hell, but it's still good to know."
