a falling out

KELS whole body was shaking, his legs with a slight burning sensation. his heart stung g with betrayal.

his brother, HERO, stood above him, tears streaming down his face, anger tainting his expression. KEL had never seen HERO so angry before and it hurt that all this anger was directed towards him. HERO's screams echoed though KEL's skull, his eyes became heavy, he knew the tears were coming, he knew it. the last time KEL cried in front of HERO was when he tripped and scraped his knee when he was 4, he was 11 now. HERO hadn't seen KEL cry in 7 years.

KEL couldn't help the tears from trickling down his face as his older brother screamed at him, HERO had never shouted at him- not when KEL spilt an entire bottle of orange joe all over HERO's brand new sheets, not even when KEL (accidentally) smashed HERO'S tv in with a basketball a year back.

KEL knew why his brother was mad. KEL was stupid to use MARI's name to make HERO rethink sitting around in bed all day. he knew he shouldn't have brung it up considering the only reason HERO was bedridden in the first place was because of her death. MARI was a trigger word for him, when nothing and nobody could get through to HERO, MARI always could.

KEL understood the toll MARI'S death took on his brothers mental health, it had absolutely DESTROYED him, inside and out. KEL tried his best to drown out the horrible things his brother was saying to him. he didn't want to know how much HERO hated him, he couldn't take it, large wet tears fell from KEL'S eyes faster and harder than before.

"YOU COULD NEVER- NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH SHE MEANT TO ME KEL! NEVER!!"

HERO'S throat was hoarse from all the yelling but he couldn't bring himself to stop.

"I JUST- I WISH IT'D HAVE BEEN YOU INSTEAD OF HER!"

at this point the boys parents had started coming up the stairs to try and sort out the conflict.  they quickly rushed over to HERO and pulled him into a warm embrace.

"oh HERO, mi dulce bebe- its so nice to see you out of bed honey,"

"we won't let KELSEY keep bothering you cariño, i promise you."

KEL was still sat on the cold floor, tears still streaming out of his eyes, he looked up to his mother and father holding HERO close. completely ignoring him, it was always like this, HERO got all the attention and KEL was left in the dust, no matter who was in the right, KEL was always, always going to be in the shadow of HERO. no matter how hard he tried to help or make his parents proud of him, he would always be the disappointment.. always.. always.. ALWAYS.!

HERO stood silently in his parents tight hug, he couldn't bring himself to move or say anything, well, until they let go and he could see past them. he saw the small figure of KEL sat on the floor, crying his eyes out, failing to wipe away his sorrows with his sleeve.
HERO felt terrible, why why why did he have to say all of those awful things to KEL?

and then, without a second thought HERO stepped into action and quickly got on the floor next to his weeping brother, who was now curled up and sobbing into his knees. he wrapped both of his arms around KEL, tears now threatening to spill from HERO'S eyes once again.

"KEL, oh KEL im so so so sorry KEL, i should never have said those things to you, you're my baby bro, i should be taking care of you- not making you cry like this!"

KEL lifted his head from his knees, red splotches sat under his eyelids and salty tears stained his face.

"its okay, HERO, im used to it by now, you know ill get over it.."

HERO hugged KEL tighter.

"no, no KEL, its not 'okay', i hurt you, i said awful things to you, i've never seen you cry that hard in my entire life."

KEL sat still in HERO's embrace for at least an hour- HERO had refused to let him go. their parents had left awhile ago, they told KEL they were sorry for being so quick to judge- but KEL knew it was a lie, they did not care about him, they just didn't want HERO to be upset, that's how it always was.

it was around 10pm now, and KEL was getting sleepy in his brothers arms, he knew that HERO wouldn't mind if KEL fell alseep on him, it happened all the time when they used to hang out with their friends at Faraway Park and KEL had drank a few to many orange joe's, he would run around and chase AUBREY around the lake until all the caffeine in his body had worn off and he went to go peacefully lie near HERO and MARI.

they used to love when KEL came up and was so exhausted that he ended up sleeping on top of one of them, it was just so adorable! MARI was practically KEL'S sister in law considering HERO and MARI were dating, KEL strongly believed that if she had stuck around that they would've gotten married. KEL would've loved that, he would be so proud of them. but they would never get their happy ending because the word so cruelly took MARI away.

KEL had fell asleep thinking about it. HERO noticed as soon as KEL slumped into his shoulder. the elder brother picked the younger up and put him carefully into bed and tucked him in. unlike when he was awake, KEL was a very peaceful sleeper, he barely ever moved in his sleep, sometimes HERO got out of bed to double check he was still breathing.

HERO always tried to treat his little brother well, no matter how annoying he got at times, but now he thought back to the things he said to KEL, he felt like shit for it. he wouldn't have ever wanted KEL to meet the same fate as MARI, he was just upset. but he knew that wasn't a good excuse.

HERO quickly had a shower, brushed his teeth and finally got changed out of his blue and white striped pyjamas. he felt better about himself, although he'd never forget MARI, he'd visit her grave everyday and put some nice flowers there, maybe he could ask BASIL if he had any to spare. but for right now, he wanted to get a proper nights sleep for the first night since MARI'S passing.

HERO came over to KEL'S bed.
"hey KEL, I know you're asleep, but I just want to say i- i'm really sorry about what i said to you tonight, and for not being there for you since.. MARI.. y'know.. anyways- I love you little bro"
"cya in the morning."

HERO slipped back into his fortress of blankets and fell asleep without a single vision of MARI. maybe things were finally changing, afterall.
