It was another nightmare.
The same rabbit. The same ending. But something was different. There was another presence.
I didn't know who or what it was, but its presence was suffocating. Demanding. But I could never see it. Whether it hid in the shadows or was a figment of my imagination, I could never see where it stood.
The dream ended when the rabbit's knife plunged into my chest. As I woke with a start, my hand flew to my chest. No knife, no wound. Safe and out of the nightmare. For the second night in a row.
I would have been fine if the dream hadn't occurred twice. Yesterday wasn't bad, the dream just went away as the day went on. But today? No, there was no way I could act normal after that.
It was already 5:50. I got up to get ready, hoping that maybe doing the normal routine would help to get the day started. It didn't. I was dragging, the nightmare haunting me even while I was awake. I felt watched. I felt like the rabbit's eyes were still lingering even though it was all a nightmare.
It took me 15 minutes to get to the plex. Longer than I would have liked but I still clocked in on time.
Since I had no desire or energy for the slide today I opted to take the stairs to the daycare. It felt weird and completely out of character but it was needed.
Opening the large wooden doors to the daycare, I headed straight to the security desk. I was tired and needed to sit before I fell over from exhaustion. I didn't even call to Sun. I just walked to the desk, dropped my stuff, and sat in the chair. The second I had fully sat down, I was asleep. The last thing I remember was hearing Sun splash into the ball pit.
The second I heard the first kid, I was up. Luckily, I hadn't had any more nightmares during my nap. As I was still waking up, I turned to my computer to start it up and log in. As the kids filed in, I took attendance and made sure everyone had been registered at the front desk.
After a couple of hours of doing a bit of inventory and other paperwork, I noticed one of the kids walk up to the desk. I was a little girl, maybe 5 at the most. If I remember correctly, this is Maya. She was here on my first day and had immediately taken an interest in me.
"Mx. Star? Would you want to play with us?" she asked, with her cute little baby voice.
Oh, right. That little name. Since some of the kids had trouble with my name, they all opted to call me Mx. Star. It made sense to the kids. I was Sun's helper, we were both very friendly to each other, and around each other all the time. And as long as it made sense to the kids, that was all that mattered to the kids.
"Why of course, little Maya. What are we going to be playing?" I ask as I quickly abandon the work that was no longer important. It can wait till tomorrow.
"We want to play house but we don't have a parent!" she exclaims, quickly taking my hand and leading me to the rest of the kids.
"Oh, I see. But why me?"
"Because you're the best Mx. Star! You know sooooo many things and you're funny! Mr. Sun always gets things wrong," she finishes with a frown.
"Aww, Mr. Sun is trying his best! You shouldn't let a few mistakes affect how you see him," I say with a small smile. Man, can a kid hold a grudge?!
