The next two weeks went by satisfactorily. With the holidays coming so soon the kids were seemingly on their best behavior. While there are usually at least 30 kids in the daycare, today was one of the laid-back days. Since there were only eleven kids today, Sun and I didn't have too much trouble keeping them under control.
The biggest thing that happened with the kids that morning is their great idea to jump onto Sun and try to tickle him. Which resulted in a couple of small bruises from knees and elbows bumping into sides and thighs.
Once everyone had settled down for lunch, I made my way to the security desk to grab my lunch. Looking back up, I saw Sun sitting at the table with the kids. And he was staring straight at me. The look in his eyes was different, like a mix between happiness and confusion. He's never looked at me like that before.
Confused, I tilted my head to the left just slightly, the curve of my brows deepening. Sun finally noticed I was staring back and whipped his gaze to the floor. Slightly smiling at his reaction, I brushed it off and walked back to eat with the kids.
I had noticed him doing it in the past couple of days, the staring, but I never thought much about it. There could be a number of reasons as to why he was staring at me but I chalked it up to him just being curious as to where I was going. Becoming more confident in my answer as I finished up my small lunch, I found myself zoning out, focusing very intently on a spot on the table.
It wasn't until Sun almost gave me whiplash trying to break me from my trance, to actually come to. The look on Sun's face caused guilt to settle deep in my gut. His rays were retracted so far into his head he looked bald and his eyes were as wide as they could be for a robot with limited face articulation.
"S-sunshine, you scared m-me," he said, voicebox warbling in the process. "You didn't wake up when I called! I w-was calling for two m-minutes! Was it another f-freeze?"
Blinking a couple of times, I place my hand on Sun's shoulder. Trying my best to comfort him, I say, "Sun, no I'm fine. I promise. If I ever have another freeze, I'll tell you, okay?"
Quickly wrapping me up in a hug, Sun whispered, "Okay."
His voice was so quiet, I almost missed it. It broke my heart. He's always been so worried that I would freeze again even though it's been weeks since my first and only ones.
Not letting me go, Sun picks me up and takes me over to the naptime area, where most of the kids were already setting up their mats and pulling out the blankets and pillows. As Sun sat himself and me in the center of the floor, the kids quickly gathered around us and waited for Sun or me to give further instructions.
Sun quickly rose to the occasion saying, "Okay my little Rays, it's time for me to set and my friend Moony to rise. Remember, it's naptime so no playing while Mr. Moon is out, okay? We can play more when I come out again!"
Once Sun gave his tiny speech, he turned his head to look at me in his lap. Guess that means lights out. Giving him a small nod in return, I bring up the controls for the lights on my fazwatch. Once Sun has given a final wave to the kids, I switch off the lights. Closing my eyes, I wait for their switch to finish. You would think that with me in their lap that their change would be hindered but it wasn't. It went by in a flash and, from what I could tell, pretty smoothly as well. I felt Moon's arms wrap around my midsection as he started to hum a lullaby for the kids. It was familiar but I couldn't quite place the name of it.
As the song went on, the kids fell asleep one after the other until the last kid finally slipped into a comfy dream. My eyes drooped as Moon's song finally came to an end, my head lolling forward. I felt so close to sleep until Moon's own head came to rest on my shoulder. My eyes flew open before quickly seeing Moon out of the corner of my eye. His eyes were closed and he looked so happy and peaceful. I didn't dare move. My gaze softened as I looked at him, eyes tracing his features. I would trust him with my life. I'd trust both of them with so many things. They're so nice and sweet how can I not? They wouldn't ever hurt a fly.
