Chapter 1: Go and talk to him

A dark sunset appeared in the almost clear sky, but the light from the jewel bathed everything in a pleasant light.
It was cold like every night.
He stretched once and settled himself comfortably on the steps, listening to the chirping of the crickets.
He loved it, this calm... this serenity.
In this isolated world there was only him and his sanctuary.
But not for long, as he heard the voice of a familiar person.
"Hey Knuxii~" came from the bat who landed right in front of him.
He growled in annoyance. Wherever he was, she was always close to him.
Last time he'd left Angle Island to visit Amy, she had been close to him, he'd sensed it. From an early age, the echidna had the ability to sense the different energies of others.
Every body was filled with chaos energy:
Humans had a small amount in their bodies, while the hedgehogs he knew had the most. Sonic's power was wild and impetuous, Silver's was barely noticeable, and he didn't want to think about Shadows.

Rouge kept talking about him when she was with him. This made Knuckles angry. Not because he was jealous, but because he just hated him. This habit of giving everyone the cold shoulder infuriated him. Especially since they were very good friends back then, but Shadow had distanced himself from him as if their friendship had never existed.
Since then, the guard hasn't wanted to hear from him, whether he's okay or not. He was tired of chasing after their friendship so he gave up and they never saw each other again.
"What do you want from me Rouge?!" he grumbled as she adjusted her clothes and brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

She was pretty, but he would never ask her out on a date, partly because he had never really shown any interest.
"I'm glad to see you too, my love." She sighed, stretching her wings and yawning wearily. "I've been out for 3 full days for G.U.N and I'm dead tired. I saw your island and thought I could take a little break here. I think that's ok, isn't it? ~"
A tired smile was on her lips, her eyelids were only half open and she was about to fall asleep.
Taking a deep breath, Knuckles picked her up carefully and carried her into his house, which he had built on the island. Once there, he laid his rival on his bed and then covered her up.

"Thank you Knucki." It came from her. Then she jumped up. "Oh, I almost forgot. Tails asked me to send you to him."
"mmm? Why is that?" Knuckles asked, and Rouge handed him her phone.

Fox boy (Tails):
Hello Rouge.
Can you do me a favor and send Knuckles to me? It's important, I need his help. Since I heard that you guys are trusting each other now, could you watch the Master Emerald for him too while he's with me?

Rouge:
Hello darling
Of course I could, but I think I could get a reward for it~
How about a Chaos Emerald? What are you thinking~? Would you give me that in return?

Fox boy (Tails):

Rouge:

"Are you kidding me?" snapped the echidna. "Like I'm leaving my island for something like that. I've got better things to do than-"
"Now hold your breath, red head! Why are you so absent from your friends when they need you? Is it still because of Shadow?" She cut him off.
"I..." the red one started, but he knew there was no point in hiding it. Rouge knew a lot about him and knew that deep down he missed him.
The calm way he always treated him, the very light touches and hugs gave him the feeling of not being alone at the time. But now they were gone.

"Now listen. I know you miss him, but he's not gone yet, you know. Shadow is a very good friend and doesn't do things like that because he feels like it. I've tried to get it out of him too, but he won't talk to me about it. You could visit him after your visit to Tails." She suggested, but he just crossed his arms over his chest and looked away.
"Okay, I knew it. Your friendship means nothing to you anymore, right? Too bad. I thought for a moment you weren't that scared, but I was wrong."
Rouge knew how to provoke her friend, because the heat immediately rose to his head. "Fine! I do it. My goodness, you're really annoying."
She grinned provocatively and started laughing. "It's my job, Knuckles. Now go on, I need my beauty sleep now." With these words, she settled herself comfortably on the bed and was asleep within a few seconds.
How dare you kick me out of my house?! thought Knuckles.
But then he sighed and left the house. Rouge was right. He's been way too distant with his friends since what happened with Shadow.
"I'm insane...a year ago I wouldn't have even let her near my emerald and now?" murmured Knuckles, taking one last look at the shrine before leaving his home and gliding towards Greenhill.
