Chapter 2: During Midnight

A little further away in the lab, the dangerous Dr. Ivo Robotnik laughed, staring at the monitor. The chat history between Rouge and Tails was reflected in his glasses.
"Hohoho my young fox friend. he grinned. "That's perfect."
"What is perfect doctor?"
He turned and looked at his two creations, Orbot and Cubot. "This situation is perfect." He laughed. "This will be my chance to finally get rid of Sonic and his annoying friends."
Smiling evilly, his hand slid over his mustache, still staring at the computer.
"What do you mean by that, sir?"
"You'll find out soon enough, come on now. We have a lot of work ahead of us."

"And Tails? What does Knuckle Head look like? He comes?"
Tails, who had just improved his machine a bit, almost dropped his wrench in shock. "Sonic, what did I tell you?"
"Not to bother you while you work, I know." Sonic giggled.
"As for your question, I think Knuckles will come. I think he will arrive tonight. It's a bit further away from Angle Island."
The blue hedgehog grinned. "Pff. I could be there in minutes."
The fox boy rolled his eyes a bit annoyed. "Well, unfortunately not everyone can be like you, Sonic." You could clearly hear his sarcasm.
"It's okay Tails, I'll let you work in peace now."
"Thanks." Tails stood up, put the wrench aside and turned to his friend. "And uhm Sonic? Could you fix dinner for the three of us tonight?"
"Sure, no problem."
"Remember, Knuckles is a vegetarian. Not that it ends like last time. It still gives me stomach ache to think that Knuckles really didn't eat that day."
"Oh, if he had really been hungry, he would have gotten something."
"I do not think so."
"Mmm? Why?"
“That was the day Shadow stopped talking to Knuckles. He ignored him all day."

They had been invited to a picnic by Amy and Vanilla.
From Team Sonic to Team Chaotix, everyone was there.
They all had fun except for Shadow. He didn't seem really paying attention and just stared around.
When the echidna approached him beaming, he couldn't take it anymore. He wanted it to stop.
His best friend tried to make him laugh or at least smile after greeting him with a stupid but also funny joke, but he just walked away. Of course the red one called after him, but he didn't even turn around.
It went on like this all day. Wherever Knuckles appeared, Shadow fled. In time, Knuckles gave up and sat in the shade of a tree. Lost in thought about what he had done wrong. Cream and Vanilla had offered him food, but he didn't want it. He felt sick and wanted to leave.
So he wanted to leave the party, but Espio held him back and started talking to him normally.
Espio's calm and serenity was exactly what the guard needed at that moment. Over time he got better and smiled. In pain, but he smiled.

"I know. I wonder if he ever recovered from that." It came thoughtfully from Sonic
Tails carefully took his colleague's hand. "If only I knew. Knux did meet up with Amy a few days later, so I think so. At least he has someone to talk to about it-"
A loud knock, already integrated with hammering, sounded from outside.
Sonic jumped up, ran to the door to open it. "Speaking of the hothead." He greeted his team member. Knuckles was soaked, his fur was tousled and his dreadlocks were a mess.
"Let me in Sonic. It's cold outside." The older one asked him. "Wait a minute, Knux." Said the hedgehog, ran into the bathroom and got a big towel for his rival.
He thanked him, took off his shoes and followed him to Tails.
"Let's get straight to the point. I don't have a lot of time. I have to do something."
Sonic couldn't help but roll his eyes. "Impatient as always. First dry off Knuckle-Head."
"How about we try my machine tomorrow? I'm exhausted from all the work anyway." said Tails, who yawned tired.
"Okay, but I can't stay here for more than 2 days. Angle Island is hardly safe right now. Rouge is a strong lady, but I doubt my emerald will still be there when I arrive." murmured the echidna while toweling himself off.
"Understood. I can take you home on the tornado tomorrow if you like Knux."
"Thanks Tails, I really appreciate that."
Sonic briefly stretches his body before scurrying upstairs to his room for a nap.
"You can sleep here on the sofa. I'm going to sleep now too. You know where the blanket and pillow are. Sleep well Knuckles."
"You too Tails."

Loud noises were heard, shaking all the temples from sleep.
Something or someone was outside.
"Sonic what was that?" Tails wailed sleepily.
Then they heard someone screaming outside. "EGGMAN! How dare you! Leave NOW!"
"Quick!" Sonic grabbed his friend's arm and ran with him outside, where Knuckles was attacking one of Dr. Robotnik's robots. "About time you showed up!" The red one hissed.
While they were busy with Eggman, they didn't notice that the two assistants Orbot and Cubot had sneaked into the house and are tampering with Tails' machine.
Eggman knew Knuckles could sense the energy of creatures, which is why he sent the two robots.
After a 20 minute battle, they finally defeated the Doctor, who eventually retreated after receiving a message from his minions.
"Wow. Well done team." Sonic praised his two colleagues and they disappeared into the house. No one suspected what Eggman had actually planned and successfully carried out with this plan.
