Chapter 3: How could this happen?!

Soft and warm rays of sunshine shone straight down on him through the window.
"Come on get up."
Then someone shook his body. It was neither firm nor gentle.
"Come on. I want to try it."
"It's fine. I'm getting up." He grumbled sleepily, got up and followed the fox to his laboratory.

His leader was already waiting there, although he wasn't really one. They had always been a team that always worked together as they mostly agreed.
From time to time there was a bit of stress between Knuckles and Sonic, but it was never really stressful as they were always reassured by Tails.
"So, what do I have to do now?" the eldest asked, looking at his friends a little sleepily but also curiously.

"I'll enlighten you first. I've built a machine that will scan your level of Chaos Energy and give us a number from one to a hundred. One is the weakest and a hundred is the biggest." The two-tailed fox explained. "I call it Chaos4000."
Knuckles wasn't exactly impressed, but made an effort to sound interested.
"Okay, and what will that get you? I mean if you know my level?"
"Well, if I, or we, know, we can better decide who's going super next time."
"Mmm...makes sense..."
"While Sonic provides enough energy from outside by running in circles wearing a certain type of shoe. You would have to enter the capsule and get scanned there. That's it."

He exhaled and entered the interior of the machine. "Fine if it makes you happy and we can stop Eggman better in that way."
"Okay Sonic. Let's go." the little boy shouted excitedly.
Sonic ran outside and started running. Everything worked as planned. Tails pushed a few buttons and the machine made a few metallic noises, but something was different.
The echidna also noticed this. A strange tingling went through his body, almost painful. In a panic, he began banging on the glass, but it didn't break. He no longer had the strength he used to have.

"Oh no! Something is wrong." Tails yelled in panic, running out to Sonic and yelling for him to stop running. Irritated, the hedgehog obeyed and followed him.
They opened the door and couldn't believe their eyes. Instead of their friend Knuckles, all they saw was a small red and orange cat looking around in confusion.

She had the crescent symbol on her chest, puple, slit-shaped eyes and big fangs.
The two carefully bent down to the little creature.
"Knux...? Is you that?"
The cat stared at her briefly, meowing and nodding. When he seemed to realize what had happened, he snarled at both of them angrily.

"Oh I'm so sorry. I checked the machine again yesterday, why did that happen?" the little fox mumbled thoughtfully and began to examine his manipulated work.
He saw various cables and materials that he hadn't installed. Then he saw the logo of their nemesis. "Sonic! Eggman reprogrammed Chaos4000!" he shouted, so angry that Knuckles flinched.

He hardly noticed anything, his mind was foggy as if he had been injected with a strong drug.
He stood shakily on his 4 paws, looked dazed through the workshop.
"Are you alright buddy?" Sonic asked, carefully picking him up, carrying him to Tails and carefully setting him down in front of him. "He hardly notices anything."
"I am so sorry. I-"
The cat raised a paw to show him he was fine.
"Tails, he's fine." Sonic reassured him. "He's just a bit dazed."

"Hohoho!!" They heard it from outside. Startled, the two stormed out of the house only to see Eggman, who had the Master Emerald with him.
"I wanted to thank you, Tails. I never would have gotten to this without you." He laughed triumphantly. "I mean Knuckles would never have jumped into a machine because he doesn't trust technology. But he trusted you. Hehe to my advantage."

Knuckles appeared to be fully awake again, ran out of the lab and glared at the sky. Hissing and staring at the Doctor with a look that could kill. Then he meowed.
"I have to disappoint you my dear friend. That didn't sound very threatening if you ask me. It sounds rather amusing."

"You're going to pay for this, Egghead. Sooner or later, when we turn Knux back, he'll probably rip your head off himself." Sonic threatened. As he spoke, he couldn't help but grin at the thought of an enraged and fuming echidna entering the lab of the wacky doctor would destroy with his bare fists.

"There won't be a next time, Sonic." The bald man announced, snapping his fingers and a large, hulking robot stepped out and attacked the three.
Sonic and Tails had no trouble dodging, but Knuckles was caught off guard at the moment and was hit by the attack. Meowing in pain, he tried to escape from the danger zone.

The other two employed artificial intelligence over time. So they didn't pay attention to the fact that the doctor slowly made his escape. With the Master Emerald!
Of course, the guard wanted to go after him, but this infernal pain got to him so much that he lost consciousness and no longer realized that the flying egg-like vehicle from Dr. came back and took him too.

Suddenly she opened her eyes and looked around.
Her entire body ached from the struggle she had had.
"Damn it!" she cursed furiously. "Knuckles is going to make my life pure hell when he finds out and then it's the end of us." she sighed. She had finally earned his trust over time, only to lose it again? She couldn't allow that. After all, the red one meant a lot to her.

She quickly pulled out her mobile phone and dialed the number. Impatiently she switched on the loudspeaker while staring at the display in the hope that it would take off faster.
"C'mon, pick it up honey." She mumbled.
There was a hoot, but it stopped and was replaced by a familiar voice. "What's up Rouge?" He sounded tired and upset, not a good assumption.
"Hello, my favorite hedgehog." She greeted him. "Your voice sounds wonderful, as always. I'm always happy when we talk to each other."
"Get to the point! I'm in the middle of a conference with the Comanda right now. What did you do?"
She sighed. "Could we see our favorite Doctor soon?"
"Why?"
"He has something that belongs to me."
There was a brief rustle, as if someone were digging through paper. "G.U.N assigned us to patrol Eggman's base anyway. So that we can destroy his robots, so why not. I still have a word to talk to Robotnik anyway."
"Sounds great. When are we going?"
"Next week. And put on your uniform this time. We almost got caught because of you last time."
"Yeah, that's good you grumpy bear."
He had hung up.
"Your turn soon, Eggman!" She grinned wickedly.
