ONCE UPON A TIME, in a now extinct kingdom by the sea, somewhere near the Blue Mountains, a wizard was out for a walk, when he heard the distant wails of a dying woman. He searched for her, and when he had found her, he was welcomed by an awful sight. A mermaid laid dying, her tail was torn in more places than one, bone exposed and chunks of her flesh hanging from every limb.

The wizard took pity on the dying creature, choosing to save her life. And once she had healed, she told him of her story. Her own kin had cast her out when she had fallen in love with a human. The act was punishable by death. For her love for a human was considered a sin among the mermaids of the time.

When the mermaid asked how she could repay the man for saving her life, the wizard asked her to care for an infant he had created. The mermaid agreed, as her only dream in life was to be a mother. The wizard promised to return within a day, bringing her a child of her very own.

Little did the mermaid know, the wizard only worked with the darkest of magic, thus the infant itself was made of darkness. He sought to create the most evil of life from pure magic alone.

Taking some of the mermaids blood and mixing it with his dark magic, he created such a child.

As promised, he returned to the mermaid, presenting the baby to her. As well as its dark secret. The baby would not live past its first 5 years of life without taking the soul of another. The mermaid was horrified by this new knowledge and began to refuse the child, but before she could, the wizard was gone.

After getting a taste for the darkest of magic, the wizard was over come by the darkness itself. Thus, he set out to create more of his greatest creation. Until he thought it truly perfect.

The perfection came rather quickly. It looked and acted human, easily able to blend in with its prey. Their teeth, though looking perfectly normal, were strong enough to strike bone in one swift bite, tearing live flesh with ease.

Their eyes were his favorite. They shined a beautiful crystal blue. The same blue as the ocean the idea for them came from. This, he would not change. He wanted to know his children when he saw them.

Thousands upon thousands of years passed, the wizard now dead, and the creatures were flourishing. The whole of middle-earth gifting them the name of Sirens. Due to their need to sing to keep their youth.

They were small in number, due to the hunting of their kind, reducing them all to the small kingdom of Jerhem, where they were banished by all of middle-earth to live.

One quiet afternoon, which began like all the others, the ones who wanted their race dead attacked Jerhem. The first time in centuries since all the races were on the same page. They set out to kill every last Siren, taking their lives before the Sirens could take theirs.

Deep in the village, a human woman grasped the hands of the two children she had raised. "Stay close." She was not their mother, no, she was just a maiden who had been given the task. Even though, she was the only mother they had ever known. Her dark brown her in great contrast to their bright blonde hair.

She moved quickly between buildings, inching closer to the vast forest behind the village. The children clung to her in terrified desperation.

"Stop!" A human had spotted the trio.

The woman picked up her pace, the children doing the same. A high pitched whirl shot through the air, striking the woman deep in her back. The attacker hadn't realized she was human.

"Madelaine!" The smallest child cried as the woman collapsed.

"Eron." The woman struggled to breathe, looking up at the older boy, her hands still clutching those of the children. "You must protect Adella. She is your family now."

"No." Adella shook her head in protest, her vision blurred. Though she was young, she was a very smart girl, and she knew what Madelaine was implying. "You must come with us." She refused to release her hand.

Madelaine looked at her. Blood trickled down her chin from the corner of her mouth. The arrow had pierced a lung. "Adella, be brave." She wheezed. "You must remain brave." Her hand went limp in the child's, her breathing and heart coming to a stop.

"No!" Adella cried. "No!" Eron took her hand, dragging her from the only home they had ever known. "Madelaine!" She called out once more, her hand slipping from the woman's.

"Adella, you must run!" Eron pleaded, his voice cracking. They wouldn't get far by him dragging her everywhere.

Adella picked up speed, now running alongside her companion. Screams of their family and friends ripped through the air, growing more distant as they ran further away.

"Don't stop running, Adella!" Eron pleaded once again, tears flowing down his reddened cheeks. He was scared.

"I won't!" Adella reassured. "As long as you don't either!"
