Do you ever get that strange falling sensation when you're half asleep, half awake? That's exactly what it felt like to me. Only a hundred times worse. I had all my senses on high alert but couldn't open my eyes. I felt my body move up and down continuously. My head was pounding and the constant ringing in my ears was unbearable. I couldn't remember what'd happened and I wasn't entirely sure whether I was alive at this point or not. I wasn't able to focus at all and certainly had brain fog. It took me a while to regain enough strength to force myself to open my eyes and when I finally did, I instantly regretted it. I moved my head around. Looking up, I saw the sky in its bluest shade, and looking down, there was nothing, except for a sea of clouds- Clouds? I screamed and screamed, soon realizing if I kept doing that, my lungs would probably collapse but that didn't really stop me.
I tried twisting and turning in a pathetic attempt to free myself from whatever had captured me but to no avail. I'd spent my entire life sneaking out to the woods and learning how to avoid ending up as prey. The only problem being, I'd never heard of a huge bird that wasn't even a bird but that was the most accurate word I could use to describe the strange creature. How are you supposed to fight something that looks like it shouldn't even exist in the first place?
Assuming I'd not manage to rip my arms from its hold, I tried to calm down and think of some sort of a plan to run for my life once we made it to wherever the bird was now taking me. I knew for a fact I was meant to end up as its meal for the day and I wasn't going to let that happen. My life might've been miserable for years but I didn't want to be eaten alive. A heart attack, a brain tumor, or any other health issue, but this? Hell, no.Once I was calm enough to think somewhat straight, I tried remembering all I knew about birds and their habits. The only ones I knew about were small and would nest in the forest where no human could bother them. Some lived in flocks, and others were loners by nature and would only interact with each other during the mating season every year. Some were herbivorous, some would hunt insects or even rodents.
The one carrying me seemed to hunt much bigger things though, one of them apparently being humans.I figured I must've fainted and so I had no clue as to how long I'd been up in the air. There was one redeeming feeling I clung to. The bird definitely wouldn't drop me so I didn't have to worry about that - at least not until there was land in sight - which didn't last long. Soon the clouds dispersed, exposing an unknown land appearing in front of me. Most of it was covered by trees which gave me hope it actually hasn't been that long since the bird had captured me and that maybe I'd be lucky enough to find my way back home safely. It could've still been the same forest but I knew my return would take a lot of time and effort.
The longer we flew, the more things I was able to see. The next thing that came to my view was a castle. No, wait, two castles, only one was bright and sun-kissed and the second one had a creepy, dark vibe to it. No sun seemed to be reaching it and it made me think of every villain's castle I'd read about in books. If I was ever to describe Maleficent's palace, that would definitely be the inspiration for it. I shivered unintentionally and prayed that was not where the bird nested. As we got closer, the view caused a spark of recognition. The realization hit me so hard that it pushed the air out of my lungs as if I got punched right in the chest. It can't be.
Remember the scary tales I mentioned earlier? Those told around Gavaldon? Yeah, right. One of them has just come to life right in front of me.
The one about two magical schools representing two opposite sides, the good one and the evil one. The one a librarian used to tell me about whenever I went to the library to get or return the books. The one I'd assumed to be a stupid bedtime story.Once we got closer, I saw a bridge connecting the buildings. There was also an enormous tower, which didn't seem to have any stairs leading up, next to it. I heard a bunch of shrieks and noticed other birds that looked exactly like the one holding me. The only identifiable feature was the difference between their sizes.
Most of them were gathering above a gigantic lake and I could've sworn I saw them drop people into it- People? Huh?
The creature holding me made a sudden turn causing me to grab onto its legs tighter in fear of falling down. It descended its flight and made its way toward the bridge between the two buildings. When we got there, it gently dropped me without leaving even a single scratch on me. I gathered all my strength in preparation for its return to torment me - some birds did that for fun before killing their prey - but it shrieked and flew away leaving me on my own. Even though I had a hunch the place I found myself at was the legendary school, I still couldn't be sure it wasn't just a coincidence.
