Even though it was early September, the weather wasn't so bad. Especially because I was no longer wet and covered in mud. I was grateful to whoever had brought my clothes to my room and placed them in the closet. Maybe they really did want me, though it still sounded like an exaggeration to me. Getting to take a hot shower was nice, too, by the way.
The sun was about to set and it made the sky turn all shades of pink. I looked around curiously as we were walking back to my dorm. Almost no sunshine seemed to be able to reach the School for Evil and I wondered if it was because of all the magic stopping it. There had to be some sort of explanation for it.
Looking to my left, I saw thousands of trees. The forest was endless and mysterious. The closer to the horizon, the darker it got. All the colors made it clear that autumn has already begun and I let myself stare at the landscape for a short while, remembering how much peace the trees around Gavaldon used to bring me. Strangely enough, despite being a fairly dangerous place, that forest made me feel at home, like I finally belonged somewhere. As long as you treat nature with respect, it'll keep you safe."Come on, I don't have all day," Lady Lesso rushed me coldly and quickened her pace not bothering to check if I was still behind her or not. All of a sudden, she was back to being her cold-hearted self and I couldn't keep up with her mood swings. One second she looks after me and then she goes back to being a bitch. And they say I'm bipolar.
I followed her inside and to my surprise, she walked me to the dorm. We didn't talk at all, both broody. I wondered what she was thinking but couldn't figure that out no matter how hard I tried."The welcoming ceremony starts in two hours. The wolves will be there to escort all Nevers, you included," she finally spoke after stopping in front of the door. "Should you need any help, just step out of your room and call them."
"Ok," was all I said.
"Let me make something very clear, Reader. Just because the School Master decided to put you in my School doesn't mean I'm one to babysit you. What are you, sixteen? I'm convinced you know how to take care of yourself and don't need an adult to look after you."
"I'm eighteen, actually," I corrected her.
"It's the same thing," she stated dismissively. "Now please, excuse me, I have many pressing matters to tend to," she was about to leave.
"Thank you," I said quietly without looking at her.
"What for?" she stopped dead in her tracks, taken aback.
"For taking me in. I know I'm an inconvenience and we both hate the idea of me studying here. I'll try my best not to cause any problems."
"I wouldn't expect anything less from you," she stated and turned around to leave but before she did, she looked back at me. "Make sure to check your door soon, there will be someone waiting for you. I will see you then."
She was gone before I could ask what she'd meant. I assumed it was going to be someone bringing the textbooks that the School Master had told me about earlier. I slowly walked to my room and closed the door behind me.
Never in my life had I seen a dormitory. My old school would only let kids from Gavaldon attend the classes so none of them needed a room to sleep in. I bet even if they were in need of a place to stay at, the school wouldn't be able to afford to turn part of the building into dorms.
I'd expected my room to be a lot smaller and it was a nice surprise to find out it was, in fact, very spacious, had a window, and wasn't in a dungeon or a basement because spending time underground with no daylight would be depressing as fu- Did I just hear a noise coming from behind the door? I froze and didn't dare breathe for a few seconds. Yes, I'm definitely not imagining it but what could it be? I shuddered at the thought of the wolves patrolling the corridors and firmly reminded myself I never wanted anything to do with them ever again in my life.
