My classmates presented all kinds of talents and I knew I could never come up with anything half as good. One boy made shadows bend to his will and at one point the room went completely dark. That was the only thing that somewhat impressed the teacher, yet we all could tell she was mostly quite disappointed with the rest of those who'd put their magic to use.

Luckily for me, we were only halfway through the list of students when wolves announced the class had ended and I breathed out in relief. It was my last class that day and I was more than excited to finally get some rest after a very stressful week. I'd planned on going to the forest after lunch and I knew if I ate fast enough, I'd make it out of the castle before sunset. I was hesitant about bringing Fenrir with me but I was also aware of the fact if I left him in my room, he'd cause pure chaos which would make people suspicious, to say the least.

The woods became unwelcoming as the weather got worse. It would snow a lot more these past few days, the sky was always dark grey and made me feel nostalgic and tired at all times. I missed summer. Or early autumn, when it wasn't as boiling hot outside but you didn't have to wear a jacket and at least two sweaters to keep yourself warm. On top of that, I still missed home. Or more like I missed what my home used to be like back when mom was with us. Life was peaceful and I felt safe. I wish it could be like that again.

"Reader, stay behind," Lady Lesso's words brought me back to reality and I sighed in defeat. I knew what was coming.

I sat on one of the desks and waited for everyone to leave the classroom. Fenrir walked around me anxiously and demanded to leave already. I told him to sit but he wouldn't listen. I eventually gave up and took off his collar as well as the leash so that he wouldn't tug on my arm all the time. It was getting quite annoying if you ask me.

Renn gave me her usual sympathetic look before walking out and closing the door.

"What is it?" I asked the teacher. I hoped she'd make it as quick as possible.

"I will be unavailable for our one on one meeting next Monday," she stated. "I know you might've had other plans for today and I am afraid you will have to cancel whatever those may be."

"Why?" I groaned impatiently. "I'm very tired and I could use a nap."

"You need practice, whether you like it or not."

"Surely skipping one session wouldn't hurt?" I pressed and prayed she'd let me go. Yet, from the looks of it, she wasn't giving in that easily.

"It's time you start prioritizing your education, Reader. You never know when you might need the knowledge you so stubbornly refuse to take in."

"Well, maybe if you stopped taking me to the forest and started actually teaching me stuff, I wouldn't struggle as much," I fired back at her and immediately regretted it.

Lady Lesso stayed quiet for a few seconds as if she hadn't heard me in the first place. Just about when I was about to apologize, she spoke, her voice quiet and icy cold. It matched the temperature in her classroom perfectly.

"Your wish shall be granted. I will not be going to the forest with you, for it is too dangerous to do so these days. It would be unwise of me to put you in harm's way just for the sake of you failing at every task I ask of you."

Ouch.

It took all strength in me not to comment on her remark but then I asked myself what difference saying anything at all would make. None.

"What's so dangerous about it all of a sudden?" I asked instead.

The Dean froze and looked at me probably for the first time since the conversation had begun. It seemed like she was looking for any kind of excuse now.
