When I left my room after visiting the nurse, I had about five minutes to get to my next class. Lady Lesso's office and my dormitory weren't on the same floor so I had to go upstairs and walk through a corridor I hadn't seen before. Being the unlucky bitch that I was, I obviously had to get myself in trouble on my way there.
"Students aren't allowed in here!" A wolf appeared in front of me out of nowhere. I stopped dead in my tracks and didn't dare speak at first.
"Are you deaf? Go to your dormitory!" He grabbed me and I yelled in agony. I knew I would've managed to escape if it wasn't for the injuries. The wolf picked me up to prevent me from fighting back.
"Let go of the girl," I heard someone say. The creature dropped me and I fell with a loud thud. I groaned, closed my eyes to make my head stop spinning, and curled up on the cold floor. "Get out of my sight." I held my breath when I realized who it was. And I'm fucked.
"Don't be dramatic, get up. You're late," Lady Lesso stated and I heard the clicking sound of her heels as she walked away. I cursed under my breath in all languages I knew - if my words had any power, she'd be dead for sure - and stood up. What a nasty bi-
"Close the door," she said when we walked inside and I did as told with a sigh.
The Dean's office was a lot more welcoming - and definitely a lot warmer - than her classroom. It smelled like old books, cinnamon, resin, and coffee. The sun had already set and it was fairly dark - the only sources of light were a few lit candles and a fireplace. I watched the flames dance around and as they did, crackles followed. It was, without a doubt, the first place in that damned castle that felt cozy. Very much like home. And by that, I don't necessarily mean the house I used to live in - just home. Someplace safe.
"Take a seat," Lady Lesso pointed to a chair next to a dark wooden writing table and sat down on the other side of it. She opened one of the drawers and after few seconds of searching, she handed me a thick book. The binding was made of leather and judging by the way it looked like, it was very old and fragile.
"That's your textbook," she stated and I gaped at her.
"A textbook for what?" I asked.
"A textbook for what?" She mimicked. "You will need it to learn the spells, you idiot."
I ignored her remark and opened the book. Inside, I found hundreds of thousands of words, all handwritten.
"Do I learn all of it by heart or-?"
"It shouldn't be a problem. Spells are very similar to Latin which I'm sure you've already learned back where you came from," she said, as if the thought of Gavaldon made her sick. Why would it, though? I figured she simply disliked all Readers and I felt sorry for all of those that came before me. No wonder everyone hated the Dean.
"How would you know that I had Latin in Gavaldon?" I asked and she scoffed dismissively, refusing to answer.
"Now, open the book on the first chapter."
"I still find it hard to believe that magic exists. Doesn't it sound stupid to you? Disappearing things, controlling the weather, and so on. I personally find it ridiculous," I stated and looked at her.
Lady Lesso's face had an amused expression all over it but she quickly went back to being her normal self. "You have already seen quite a lot of wonders this world has to offer. Isn't it enough to convince you?"
"Well-" I hesitated but before I could finish my thought, the room suddenly became colder - not significantly but it was enough for me to notice the temperature drop. Then, the fire died. The next thing to catch my attention was the book. It moved. I watched with my mouth wide open as the pages turned, each page flicked faster than the previous one. I found myself unable to turn my eyes away. Lastly, the window opened and let a strong gust of wind into the room. It would've knocked me off the chair if it wasn't for the fact it felt like I got stuck. Frantically, I fought the force keeping me in place but all of my efforts were in vain. Whatever it was, it wouldn't let go.
I glanced at the Dean and realized she had a smirk on her face.
