I grabbed a jacket on my way out. Lady Lesso didn't lock the door but I was almost sure no one would actually go in there and search through my things anyways. Maybe except for Sasha.
Both I and Fenrir caught up to the woman in the main hall. It was completely empty, all of the students had classes. It was still morning after all.
"One of your friends asked about you earlier today. I believe her name is Renn. You two share a desk in my class," the Dean stated once we made it to the shore of the lake. It was a lot warmer than the day before and all the snow had already started to melt, leaving the ground muddy. Fenrir trotted away but he rarely took his gaze off of us, or more precisely, me.
"Oh," I smiled at the thought of the girl. "What did you tell her?"
"I said you weren't feeling well and I allowed you to have a day off of school."
So it's just more lies and secrets. Great.
"How long do you think it's gonna be before everything goes back to normal?" I asked quietly, finally deciding I was mentally prepared enough.
"What do you mean?"
"Uh, you know," I kicked a small stick with my shoe and watched it fall a few feet in front of us. "I wanna go back to school. I don't wanna be stuck in my room forever."
"Nothing is ever going to be the same, Reader," she said and I wished that just this once, she would tell me the truth instead of using a lame riddle I could not solve even if I tried. "You have a lot of work ahead of you," she then added.
My face fell. "How am I supposed to learn anything when I can't even go to classes, though?"
"We will find a way. It is not just my decision to make, we need the School Master to handle it as well."
"If you told me what's going on, maybe I could come up with-"
"You couldn't," she interrupted. "Not even I know what to do now."
I came to a halt and so did she. We stood in front of each other, and none of us uttered a single word for a while. Fenrir finally joined us and sat next to me. I kneeled and wrapped my arm around him warily. He welcomed the gesture with a tail wag.
"Are you scared of him?" Lady Lesso asked out of the blue and I glanced at her.
"I don't know," I admitted truthfully, deep in my own thoughts. "He's just as lost as I am. We both never asked to be here and now I've gotten myself into something I don't understand because no one's willing to tell me anything."
She looked around and kneeled next to me.
"He is not at all what I had expected him to be," she admitted with a slight hesitation in her voice.
As if on cue, Fenrir stood up and neared her. I heard her suck in her breath. She moved away and intended to get up but I grabbed her hand and pulled her back down. "Stay."
He tolerated most people, or more like ignored them. He would show some sort of affection towards Renn and Celia, which I figured must've been because they're my friends. He would also jump all over professor Dovey which I found extremely adorable. I didn't know if it was the treats she kept sneaking for him or her genuinely lovely personality. Truth be told, I adored her as well. I mean, who wouldn't?
Lady Lesso tried to pull away but I tightened the grip on her hand.
"What are you doing?" She panicked, her gaze shifting from me to Fenrir, then back to me.
"Stay," I repeated quietly and tried to ignore that strange, tingling sensation in my stomach as I felt her skin touch mine.
She hesitated but remained in one place. When I was sure she wouldn't make a run for dear life, I let go of her.
