To say the classroom was cold would be a huge understatement. The air was so arctic that I could barely breathe. Given the humidity in there, I wondered how come there was not a single icicle in sight. The room was the least welcoming place I've seen in the School for Evil so far.
Renn dragged me to a desk far in the back and we both sat down. I looked around wrapping myself with the cloak and hiding my palms in the pockets. The walls were almost bare, except for a blackboard and a few paintings here and there. There was only one window and a few lit torches, which made the room not only cold but also quite dark
While I was busy looking around, someone shut the door and I flinched. I gazed to the front of the classroom and saw Lady Lesso walking towards her desk. After hearing so many horrible things about her, I no longer wanted to be around her. She sat on the desk and everyone went silent.
"Good afternoon, Nevers," she started in a cold voice. Even though she was smiling, I knew it wasn't sincere. More like unsettling. "We'll start with reviewing the rules and then move on to our first topic. You've certainly heard about things that help us distinguish between good and evil. The good help, the good give, the good love, and all that nonsense. We, villains, don't do that. We hate. We destroy. We punish and hurt. We take what is ours," she played with her cane as she spoke. "My job is to teach you how to do that. As you all know, evil hasn't won for a ridiculously long time. It's far more years than you all combined have lived your miserable lives for. We are all here to protect the balance. We need the balance to keep our world safe and it's impossible to do so if villains keep getting killed. Butchered like pigs. My only hope is that you'll work hard and achieve great things in your own tales."
"If it's so important then why is the School Master tampering with the Storian?" Asked a girl sitting right next to our desk. Everyone else held their breath in anticipation, myself included, wondering whether Lady Lesso would get angry or not. We'd learned before not to speak without her permission.
"And what makes you think he is?" She asked looking directly at her.
The student rolled her eyes, exasperated. "Isn't it obvious?"
"Forgive my lack of knowledge, child," the Dean answered coldly. "Would you care to enlighten me?" Her words made my blood run cold.
"Of course," I moved my gaze from Lady Lesso to the girl with my mouth wide open. I realized she was either extremely stupid or didn't care much whether she was alive or dead. "For starters, evil hasn't won for a long time, as you yourself said a few minutes ago. The Storian is believed to be located in his tower. Mind you, those who have seen his office never made it back, and no one's heard from them ever again. Isn't that suspicious? Then, there's only one Reader this year. Not that we need them at all, they're a pain in the ass," she explained pointing her finger at me.
"Watch your mouth," the teacher told her off.
"It's no mystery he's the good brother. We all know that. The Evers have it easier, especially boys," she spat with disgust, ignoring Lady Lesso's remark completely. "They teach them how to fight and defeat villains and if you wanna know my opinion on it, I think they just have better teachers."
"I am so grateful you shared your opinion with us. Is there anything else you would like to add?" The Dean asked. Yeah, probably gasoline to the fire, I thought.
"There's more, I could go on and on."
Girl, do you have a death wish?
"Why don't you, then?"
"I don't wanna spend the next thirty minutes talking about it," she shuddered. "You're our Dean, aren't you supposed to do something about it? I'm sure you could get us new, better teachers."
