For some people, parties were the one way to start your New Year happy.
For a certain other, parties were the one way to not start your New Year happy.
Shin Ryujin hadn't want to come to the party at all, but her best friend, extravert, reckless social butterfly, life-of-the-party Shin Yuna, had made her come along.
It was a New Year's party at a club in the city that their friends had rented out. Ryujin had been to several of these before, again not because she wished to, but because she was forced to by someone or other. Though Yuna told her that everyone's friends would be there, and that it would be different from going to a random club, Ryujin still knew from experience that it would most likely be filled with people drunk off their heads, broken glass, head-throbbing lights and air weighed down heavily from the stench of cheap perfume mixed with sweat and alcohol - despite the bitter cold of Seoul's winter.
And sitting here now with her back to the wall, she knew she was right. A glass still full of champagne in her left hand which she didn't especially feel like drinking, she stared blankly out into the crowd. And with her eyes scanning half-heartedly from left to right she realised everything looked the same. Despite the huge crowd of friends' friends who had brought their own friends, they all looked identical. Their messy hair bounced under the bright green strobe lights, one or two heads always pausing to trash themselves with a gulp of some alcoholic concoction before returning to the jumping.
Shin Ryujin hadn't want to come to the party at all, until her eyes finished their scan at an entrance to the far right of the club.
By the door stood a girl in a white satin blouse and black faux leather miniskirt, drink in hand as she laughed in conversation with another girl. She wouldn't have been much taller than Ryujin, and her long black hair was slickly straight down her shoulders. Ryujin quickly observed that she seemed to exude elegance, from her posture to her subtle nods to her eye contact with the other girl. It was like she was too cool to be there. Until she broke into a laugh.
She could see the girl's face crack into the brightest smile she'd seen in years. From across the room the girl's teeth shone brightly as if some human sun was radiating in the corner, and from across the room she could hear the girl's laugh, so genuine like she was happy to be talking to that other girl. Happy to be there at the party.
Shin Ryujin hadn't want to come to the party at all... She thought, until she laid eyes on that radiant girl.

Yuna walked up to Ryujin with a small sigh. "Why you sitting all the way back here, unnie?"
Ryujin shrugged her shoulders with a widening of the eyes that obviously spelled 'duh?'. "I never wanted to come here, this was your idea Yuna."
"Ugh, seriously girl," Yuna took her friend's empty hand in hers as she frowned, "is it really that bad?"
"It's fine," Ryujin brushed it off, "the air isn't much lighter here but I'd rather be at the back than in that sweaty, drunk ass crowd."
"Aww, I'm sorry," Yuna looked down a little, feeling bad her best friend wasn't seeming to have as much fun as her, "we can go outside a little if you want? The air's a lot cooler on the rooftop."
Ryujin hesitated in her mind slightly. She would be glad to get out of this place, but she had only just spotted that girl with the gorgeous laugh, and she wouldn't have minded watching her from afar a little longer. Unfortunately, as she looked back to that corner by the entrance, she realised the girl had vanished from view.
