Faking a cough into her hand, Chaeryeong shuffled in the early dawn to their bed with a hand on her forehead (which she'd warmed up with her hairdryer just after her shower). "I don't know what happened, Ryujin, I swear I was alright when I woke up..."

For all Ryujin knew, Chaeryeong had woken after their slumber suddenly feeling ill. "It just came on now?"

"Yeah," Chaeryeong sighed with a sniffle as she sat cross-legged on the bed, "I feel really awful out of nowhere."

"Do you have a fever?" Ryujin, still in their bed, whispered tentatively into the morning, as Chaeryeong tilted her head up so the older could place a cool hand on her blow-dried forehead, "oh, Ryeongie, you are hot."

"I must have caught something earlier in the week, it feels like a cold," Chaeryeong guessed, "oh, I'm so sorry to spoil your birthday morning, Ryujin."

As much as she was looking forward to going out and doing birthday things with the younger, Ryujin placed a gentle hand on Chaeryeong's knee, "no, baby, you have no need to be sorry! You always try your best to stay well so it's not your fault."

Chaeryeong smiled gratefully, trying to act as though she felt weak.

"We can always do what we were going to
another day
- today we can stay home together and I'll look after you instead,
jagi," Ryujin beamed back genuinely, "don't you worry about a thing."

Chaeryeong let out another choked cough. "Th- thanks, Ryujin."

"Do you need me to do anything for you now? I could make you a drink, get you some food... I could go out and get you some medication?"

A glimmer of strength seemed to appear in Chaeryeong's eyes, "...do you think you'd be able to buy me some cough drops? And... maybe some pringles..."

At the second request, Ryujin chuckled, before pulling her girlfriend into a loving hug, "of course, baby, just those two?"

"Yep, that'll be all," Chaeryeong watched - feigning sickness - as her girlfriend slipped easily out of her pyjamas and into some casual clothing.

"Alright, well I'll probably be back in about 30, maybe 45," Ryujin turned back to face Chaeryeong, still cross-legged on the bed, with a concerned smile, "do you want to go back to sleep, jagiya? You should rest up."

"It's okay, I might make myself some lemon and honey drink..." came Chaeryeong's reply.

But little did Ryujin know that, as soon as she gave Chaeryeong a kiss on her forehead and left for the store, the younger had snapped into action, and begun preparing her surprise for Ryujin's birthday.

The previous afternoon, while Ryujin was out at dance practice, Chaeryeong had went and picked up the most delicious cake with cream and strawberries from their favourite gourmet bakery, and the afternoon before, she had ordered a bunch of big beautiful balloons tied to a metallic weight. These, she now went to pull out of their hiding in the fridge and wardrobe, and in addition, she took a vase of fresh luscious roses from underneath the kitchen island. Finally, after much rushing about, gathering matching candles, napkins, cutlery and two plates - all faking and feigning of sickness long forgotten - she carefully arranged every element of the surprise on their dining table by the apartment door, before placing her neatly wrapped present to Ryujin gently beside the cake: two tickets to Paris, for just the two of them.

Checking the time on the clock as she finished up her preparations, she realised half an hour had nearly passed, and this had her rushing to make herself the lemon and honey drink she claimed she'd make her "sick" self, and hurriedly lighting the candles on the cake before switching every light off and clambering back into their bed. Hopefully Ryujin would be back before the candles melted it all!

Soon enough came the distant muffled jangle of their keys outside the front door, and the clunking turning of the keys in the lock as Ryujin opened the door. Followed by silence.

In front of her eyes, Ryujin saw the most amazing, beautiful, cute and sweet birthday arrangement ever. Candlelight from the cake illuminated the table in flickers of warm love that too glistened in the reflection of Ryujin's eyes, and Chaeryeong soon heard her call, "Chaeryeong? What is this?!"

She was finally able to give up her sick act, and with this, she came running to Ryujin with a beaming smile. "Happy birthday, Ryujinnie!!"

Ryujin had dropped her shopping bags beside her in shock. "But- but baby, aren't you sick? Are you okay? How did you-"

"You fell for it so good!" Chaeryeong couldn't help but laugh at the confusion on her girlfriend's face, "I pranked you, jagiya! I wasn't sick, but I needed you to leave so I could do this for you."

"So you- ohhhh," Ryujin's mind finally processed, "awwwh, Ryeongie this is so nice..."

Chaeryeong bounced shyly, in the way she always did when she was excited. "Do you like it...?"

"It's beautiful Chaeryeongie," Ryujin's eyes were wide, but no longer from shock - rather to drink in the gorgeousness set out in front of her, "where is the cake from? Did you make that?!"

"Noooo," Chaeryeong laughed modestly, "it's from our favourite bakery,
you're going to love it. But open the present!!"

Ryujin reached for the tiny package, wrapped in newspaper and tied with a smooth satin bow; simple and elegant just like the black-haired girl standing so eagerly and nervously beside her, watching with keen smiling eyes as Ryujin pulled the two tickets from the present.

Their eyes met in the glow of the candlelight still flickering. "Chaeryeong- this is amazing-"

"I'm so glad you like it!!" The younger beamed, as  she pulled the older into a tight embrace, "but you should blow out those candles quickly, they've been on for a while now... Don't forget to make a wish!"

Once the candles were out, they turned to face one another once more in the dim of the room, "thank you, Chaeryeong. Oh my gosh, the trip sounds so exciting, baby I'm so thankful-"

She was cut off by two lips of softness and cherry chapstick on her own, a kiss which she gratefully returned. "What did you wish for? Oh- wait, you can't tell me."

"Sorry, jagiya, I would if I could," Ryujin replied to the adorable pout on her happy girlfriend's face.

"It's okay," Chaeryeong quickly forgave, "well, I wish you the happiest birthday ever."

And as they embraced a second time, all worries of sickness and missing out on birthday activities now aside, Ryujin's birthday wish echoed in her mind:

I wish that I can spend the rest of my life together with this girl. Forever and ever.
