Wei Wuxian stood in awe and looked around. He had not been outside for so long that he had all but forgotten how great feeling sunrays on his skin and breeze on his face could be. Back inside the house, everything was quiet if he or Lan Wangji did not disturb the silence. But out here, it looked like life have never stopped even for a single second: birds were singing, wind was playing with the leaves and from very far away, he could hear sounds of mundane everyday life of the city.
Wei Wuxian stood in place and his friends did the same. They must have caught onto how awed he was and they were letting him process everything. With them by his side, Wei Wuxian's fear of other people suddenly appearing and hurting him was greatly diminished. If he could, he would have just sat down somewhere on the sun and enjoyed the peaceful tranquillity to his heart's content.
He turned to Lan Wangji to ask if they could take a little breather before they would go on the much needed walk. However, his childhood friend was way ahead of him and he was already offering: "Wei Ying, what would you like to do? If you wish, we can just sit around or walk for a bit. But if you are not completely comfortable here, I know of a place where we would definitely not be disturbed by anyone. I wanted to show you for the longest time."
Wei Wuxian had to smile. He had perhaps never seen Lan Wangji this eager. Although his childhood friend's face remained as expressionless as ever, he could see it in his eyes. They were sparkling with anticipation. They were also very soft, as if he was afraid that his words would be misunderstood and he wanted to show that he meant them sincerely.
Wei Wuxian did not think for a second and he nodded. If Lan Wangji was inviting him to see something, he believed that he would like it and that it would in no way be hard for him. When had Lan Wangji ever asked or proposed something Wei Wuxian did not like or that had hurt him? He trusted that the other had only his best interests in mind.
A small smile made itself at home on Lan Wangji's lips and softened his expression. He took Wei Wuxian by his hand and led him away without a word. It looked like he was keen on surprises and wanted to first show him before revealing where they were going. Wei Wuxian was at ease and he followed the other easily. He could hear Mo Xuanyu walking behind them and he was glad that all three of them could spend more time together.
They circled the small house and went deeper into the small forest park surrounding it. It helped Wei Wuxian to relax even further. He was glad that they were going farther and farther away from any school buildings. He felt fine now, so it was possible that he would not overreact if he saw any, however, it was still better if he did not try his luck too much. He did not trust himself that he would be able to keep his bad memories properly at bay.
They did not walk for long. Although the small house which had become his sanctuary had disappeared from view, Wei Wuxian was sure that it was just behind the closest line of trees. Even so, the world seemed to have changed completely. All the hustle he had noticed and which had reminded him of everyday life, like faint noises of traffic, could not be heard anymore. It was as if the small forest park had engulfed them and they were walking through its deepest part. He loved the calm and peace of it.
A few more steps and suddenly, sunlight shone through tree branches. There seemed to be a clearing up ahead. Now Wei Wuxian was getting really curious about what exactly Lan Wangji wanted to show him. For his childhood friend seemed as eager as ever to reach their destination. Consciously or not, his steps were getting a little hurried but Wei Wuxian did not complain. The sudden small spark of curiosity had grown and he could not wait to see what the surprise was.
They arrived on the limits of the clearing. The view was stunning and Wei Wuxian could feel the rest of his fears and unsettling nervousness disappearing. He had never seen a place like this, so serene and full of light. Unlike the rest of the forest park, this place was not flat. The terrain was slightly uneven, forming miniature hills and valleys here and there. Lush grass was covering the ground, inviting him to lay down and relax. If he should describe the perfect place for meditation, this would be it.
"Careful now," Lan Wangji warned. Before Wei Wuxian could ask him what he meant, his childhood friend made a curious noise and looked over the clearing in anticipation.
A second later, Wei Wuxian realized that this was indeed the best place in the whole world. The clearing was no longer quiet and empty, it was brimming with life now. At least a dozen of pure white rabbits appeared seemingly out of nowhere when Lan Wangji called them. They hopped excitedly in their direction, some more courageous than others. The sight warmed Wei Wuxian's heart.
"Lan Zhan, are those..." he whispered, heeding his childhood friend's earlier warning. He did not want to spook the cute little furballs.
"Mn," Lan Wangji nodded, "they are my pets. I thought you may like them."
Wei Wuxian did not have any words to express just how much he enjoyed watching the rabbits hop around them without a care in the world, greeting them and putting their snow white paws on their shoes and pants as they were inspecting them. They looked so cute.
"Can I..." asked Wei Wuxian again.
He barely waited for another of Lan Wangji's 'Mn's and he was already squatting down and reaching out his hand to pet the most curious of the animals. The rabbit did not run away, instead, it seemed to like the attention and it started immediately sniffing Wei Wuxian's hand and nudging at it. It was so cute and funny, Wei Wuxian could not resist and he laughed quietly.
Out of nowhere, Lan Wangji was squatting by his side and he was offering him a carrot. Wei Wuxian beamed at him. He took the carrot and teased the little rabbit into standing up on his hind legs to get the treat. Hearing that one of them was munching on a piece of vegetable, the rest of the animals surrounded the three friends and they could not find enough hands to feed the begging mouths quickly enough.
Wei Wuxian let himself melt into the moment. Lan Wangji had apparently been prepared in advance and he had a great number of carrots on hand. The rabbits were so cute and soft as they were munching on their treats and letting Wei Wuxian pet them. This felt like heaven, it was the happiest moment he could remember in a very long while.
In the end, the carrots were all eaten and the rabbits gave up on begging for more. They slowly dispersed around the clearing, going thought their own business. Some were eating grass, their small noses twitching funnily, others laid down on their sides, leaning on the humans who had come to sit down and enjoy the sun. One even hopped into his lap and made himself right at home.
Wei Wuxian was sitting quietly, just as the other two, and letting his fingers dive into the soft fur. If he could, he would stay like this for the rest of his life. He was grinning like an idiot, eternally grateful to Lan Wangji that he could enjoy this peaceful moment to the fullest.
