I wasn't quite sure where I was going, except that I was going away from there.
The place where I lost everything.
Everything.
I finally managed to get the tears to stop flowing down my cheeks. But I still had the memories. Each one of Biana's words sending icy shards into my heart.
I shivered again, the cold was numbing, my hands were beginning to tint purple.
I stood at what humans called a 'bus stop'. Supposedly, a stranger comes comes to pick you up and take you wherever you want to go in, I think, a big car? Something like that.
So far no buses were coming though.
Maybe I had to shout for one?
"BUS!" I yelled, "HELLO? BUS? ARE YOU HERE?" I cried. But over the rain, it was almost impossible to hear anything.
Suddenly I heard a voice behind me, "You're not from around here, are you?"
I whipped around quickly to see a young girl, ten at the oldest. She was dressed in tattered clothing, a couple sizes to small. Her cheeks and nose were a bright pink from the cold, and her face was pale, with dark circles under her dim blue eyes. She was scowling at me.
"Who are you?" I asked her. She tossed her dark brown hair over her shoulder.
"I'm Ayla. And who the heck are you? You're the one that was shouting for a bus, right?"
I nodded, staring at this young girl with curiosity.
She arched her eyebrows, "Really?"
"Is that what your supposed to do..?" I asked.
She face palmed, I noticed a couple scared up cuts on her fingers, "You're really not from around here, are you? You just wait for it to come to you. Duh."
"Oh. Okay. Do you mind me asking, why are you out here, all by yourself?"
"That's none of your business," She snapped.
"How old are you?"
"I'm 10 1/2. And DON'T forget the half," She glared.
I nodded quickly, "I won't. Do you want me to stay with you until your parents get here?" I asked her.
"That won't be necessary," She paused, "My parents aren't coming." Her voice seemed to take a sad tone to it.
I chewed the inside of my cheek, not sure what to do. The bus clearly wasn't coming, and it's not like I had anything I could use to get back to the Lost Cities with.
"Ayla, you can stay with me. I'll look for somewhere we can stay."
"Wait... You don't have a family either?" She asked, her blue eyes widened.
"I... No. No, I don't."
She looked down for a second, then looked back at me, "How do I know you're not going to kidnap me?"
I was shocked, "Kidnap you? Why would-why would I ever do that? That's evil and cruel, why would-"
"I don't know, people here get kidnapped all the time."
All the time? Suddenly I wanted to grab her and hug her. And probably hug every human on this planet. This is what they have to go through? Constant fear of being kidnapped? And I thought life in the lost cities sucked.
This is one hundred times worse.
It's like if there were a thousand Neverseen's all around the lost cities.
Thinking about that made me want to throw up.
"You okay there, you look a little green," She noticed, crossing her arms over her chest, "And you never told me your name."
"Tam," I choked out, still trying to recover from that painful realization, "Tam Song."
"Weird name, but whatever. How about you follow me Tam Song," She smiled gleefully, and with that she skipped away.
"Uh, okay?" I said, running after her.
Little did I see the invisible girl watching me the whole time.
