Chapter 9 // Opening up

(Lucas POV)

We get to chipotle and order our food through the drive through so now we're here currently waiting for the food.

The car ride there was silent and now we are here sitting in silence again.

I honestly was waiting for her to start the conversation because I was too nervous but it doesn't seem like she is. So here goes nothing.

"Hey Max" I speak up catching her attention.

"Mmm" She hums in response.

"You ok?" I ask her looking at her next to me.

She looks at me puzzled.

"Huh? Yeah I'm fine you?" Max asks back.

I nod lying as I look forward.

I'm not fine but no one can know that. It's just not worth it.

I'm not worth it.

"You sure" Max says. I look over at her and she's staring into my eyes catching me by surprise.

"Yeah just tired..." I lie. She doesn't look convinced but before she can keep interrogating me the chipotle worker knocks on my window. I pull the window down as the worker passed us the food.

She got a salad and I got a burrito.

Two drinks.

We start eating in silence. As I was drinking my drink Max speaks up.

"So Lucas tell me more about yourself" She says.

"Umm...well my full name is Lucas Charles Sinclair and i have one sibling which is my annoying little sister, I also have my mother and my father and we all used to live in Chicago my whole life until we chose move here so we can have a better life but my sister stayed in Chicago with my grandma but yeah that's my whole life really..." I say leaving out an important part.

The part where I got treated like shit and we moved here because my dad beat up so bad that people started to notice so we had to move for there sake not mine. And how I got treated like shit at school and at home.

Max nods.

"So what about you Maxie?" I counter her with her question. She scrunches her face at that nickname all the time and it makes me laugh every time.

"Well my life is probably more boring than yours..." Max starts. "Well I used to live in California with my mum and dad and we were happy until my mum cheated on my dad with a man named Neil and they got divorced which made my mum move here to Indiana Hawkins with Neil and his annoying son billy..." She continues. I just looked at her shocked.

Damn.

Why is she opening up to me?

"Then my step brother billy died in a car crash drunk driving which sent my step dad Neil into a deep depression. He would drink every night. Treat my mum and me like shit everyday" She says as a tear slips out her eye.

She looks at me trying to read my face.

"And then Neil killed himself which sent my mum into a spiral where she would drink everyday and blame me for billy and Neil's death which caused child services to take me away from her as she was unfit to look after me" She continues opening up. "And that's where I met Mike and his family who took me in immediately and made me feel loved and cared for me like I was one of there own and that's basically my whole story till now..." She finishes looking at me.

Holy shit.

I felt so bad for her. She had to deal with all of that.

I look into her eyes feeling bad.

I see her eyes glistening.

"Sorry I didn't mean to open up to you like that" Max says wiping her eyes looking away embarrassed.

"Hey" I say grabbing her hand. She looks at my hand holding hers.

"Don't ever say sorry for that! You didn't deserve to go through all that and I'm glad you trust me enough to tell me all that" I say rubbing my thumb over her hand trying to comfort her. She sends me a small smile so I guessed it worked.

"Come here" I say pulling her into a hug. She starts sobbing onto my shoulder as I rub her back comforting her.

"Your fine...your fine...trust me your fine I feel your pain max" I say as she grips onto me harder. She continues crying for a few minutes until she finally stops.

"sorry I'm ruining this..." Max says pulling away from the hug.

"Hey what did I talk about saying sorry" I say furrowing my eyebrows at her. She rolls her eyes smiling. We return back to eating our food and just continued getting to know each other. 

"So your telling me you still sleep with a teddy bear" Max says laughing. I roll my eyes. "Yes Max I still sleep with my teddy and don't tease me about it I already get enough bullied from my little sister because of it" I say looking at her laughing still.

I felt guilty as we continued talking. She opened up to me and I didn't even open up back to her. I seriously would of never guessed she had all that pain inside of her. She was a sweetheart with a good heart always smiling.

But I guess never judge a book by it's cover.

"Hey you know you can talk to me about anything right?" Max says grabbing my hand snapping me out of my thoughts. I nod in response.

Trust me Max I want to open up but I can't risk it. I don't want to ruin my family.

I look over at her and she looks at me hurt. I can't blame her. She opened up to me and I can't even do the same for her. "Sorry Max I just have a lot of demons in my head and I can't ever open up about it...trust me I would if I could" I mumble hoping she didn't hear the last part. She nods in response so I guess she didn't.

"Anyway I had a great time with you today" Max says as I begin to drive her home. I feel a smile appear on my face as I look over at her. "Yeah me too..." I say smiling at her. She smiles back as I look back in front of me. "Your Amazing and beautiful" I meant to say in my head.

"Huh?" Max says feeling her cheeks burn.

I look over at her confused.

"What happened?" I ask her confused.

"You just said I'm amazing and beautiful..." She says looking down blushing.

"Oh? Shit I meant to say that in my head" I say mentally face palming myself. She laughs in response. I look back at the road. I feel my cheeks burn in embarrassment.

Lucas your such a dumbass I tell myself.

Eventually we make it back to Max's house. I stop the car as I get out opening the passenger door for Max. She smirks as she gets out.

"Hmm gentleman" Max says kissing my cheek. I feel my cheeks burn once again. I stand there flustered until I hear Max shout from her door. "See you tomorrow Lucas!" She says snapping me out of my thoughts. I smile and wave at her as I enter my car to start driving home.

Wow.

Wow.

And wow.  She's amazing...
