(Lucas POV)
I just stare into her eyes gulping. I could see in her eyes that she really wanted to know and for some reason I really wanted to tell her.
But I couldn't...
"Umm..I told you already..." I lie scratching the back of my neck nervously. Max just looks at me and sighs.
"Lucas I don't know why your lying to me. I've been nothing but nice to you and treated you like a friend as you are but I just don't get why you can't trust me..." she says slightly with sadness laced in her tone.
I close my eyes as I look down at my feet. I felt bad for making her sad and making her feel like I don't trust her.
"Max...I trust you it's just some things are best to leave alone" I reassure her looking back up at her as she sits down on the bed next to me.
"So something did happen.." Max says. I nod in slowly response.
"Ok it's fine just please tell me eventually..." She continues as she rests her head on my shoulder. I gulp as I feel nerves. I never really had a girl rest on my shoulder before. It was something new but I weren't complaining.
We stay like this for a few minutes caught in our own thoughts until someone walks in her room. I look up as I see Mike enter the room with wide eyes.
"WTF?!" He shouts. Max lifts her head of my shoulder slowly.
"Mike shut up I'm tired" She says wiping her eyes.
"No I won't shut up why the fuck is Lucas here and on the bed with you" Mike continues shouting.
"Ain't you supposed to be rehabbing your shoulder" he continues as he darts his attention to me. I nod.
"Well technically no I haven't had surgery yet but anyway max told me to come over because we have a school project I forgot about" I lie.
"Did Will and Dustin not tell you?" I add on as he furrows his eyebrows.
"No they didn't" he says slowly calming down.
That was a lie.
I don't know what max told dustin and Will or there parents but I hope it's something along them lines.
It's works as Mike calms down and the reddening on his face slowly dies down. The room stays quiet and you could cut the tension with a knife. Mike just stands there brainstorming for something.
"So you do need to have surgery?" Mike asks finally speaking up and changing the conversation to cut the awkward tension in the room.
"Huh? Oh yeah I have to or my injuries could hurt me later in life" I answer him. He nods understanding. Max just looks in between us back and forth confused.
"Wait you knew his arm was messed up?" She says clearly pissed off directing her attention to Mike.
"First of all Woah calm down! and second we only found out at lunch" Mike explains himself.
"We?" She asks.
"Will and Dustin know too" He shrugs. Max rolls her eyes and let's out a scoff. Now she directs her attention to me. I look into her eyes and I saw a fiery desire behind them.
It was intimidating.
"So you told them before me" She says. I shake my head.
"No they walked on in me in the school restroom without my shirt on and saw my messed up arm so it's not like I could lie to them" I explain myself to the now visibly annoyed redhead.
"Anyway why would you be mad if i told them first anyway?" I say furrowing my eyebrows at her confused by her sudden outburst. She shrugs and looks away.
Hmmm. Weird.
I look back up and realised Mike is no longer standing in the door way. I stand up and Max looks at me.
"Where you going?" She asks.
"Home?" I say confused. She nods and looks back at her tv with a smile plastered on her face. I furrow my eyebrows even more confused.
"Do I have to stay here or something?" I ask confused.
"No...I mean it's not like You lied and told my step brother whose overly protective that we were just working on a project and then he just sees you leave the house minutes after" She says with sarcasm laced in her tone.
"So what are you implying?" I ask her.
"I'm applying that you have to stay here a bit longer to make it believable..or you could just leave and make Mike question why you were really here" Max says as she directs her attention to the tv turning it on. I sigh as I see a smirk appear on her face.
"Wipe that smirk mayfield" I say as I plop myself down on her bed.
"Mayfield?" She asks confused.
"Yeah your second name is mayfield right?" I counter her with a question jokingly but as I look at her face it looked like she seen a ghost.
"Max? Hey you ok?" I ask worryingly. "Huh? Oh yeah I'm fine just please don't call me that" She replies. I nod feeling bad but also confused. Why would she not like being called by her second name?. I let it go as Max grabs the tv remote as plays a random show. I see her lean back on the headboard and turn the light off.
I continue sitting on the end of the bed not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable until I feel a soft hand touch my shoulder.
"Hey Lucas come here" She says pointing next to her. I nod as I hesitantly lean backwards next to her. I rest my head on the wooden headboard as I direct my eyes towards the tv. I breath in and out slowly as the show started playing. Silence filled the room.
I suddenly feel a head rest on my shoulder. I look at the head and see Max staring at me. "You know you can talk to me about anything right?" She says. I look away gulping. Them eyes. Crystal blue ocean eyes daring me to let the cracks slip. I sigh as I look back at Max.
"Yeah I know that..." I say. She nods as she continues resting her head on my shoulder directing her attention to the tv again.
This girl.
Why do I always nearly slip up?
Why every time I look into her eyes I feel that I can let go and tell her everything?
I don't know what this feeling is but I know it's something I've never felt for someone before.
