It's been two years since my biological brother kidnaped Reggie and me. It's been a tough road trying to heal from it. I was assigned another therapist, but one that Garcia did a deep background check on. But Dr. Matthews was fantastic and really helped me. He was even helping Reggie deal with what happened. The weekend after being kidnapped, Reggie took me out on a date. We were a little scared to be ourselves since the last time we got kidnapped. So we went on a double date with Luke and Julie. Yes, they both finally admitted that they liked each other, and it was also their first date. You think it would have been awkward, but we had a lot of fun. The guys took us out roller skating, which I had never done before, so Reggie had an excuse to hold me close to him.
In these two years, I've gotten closer to all of my friends, learning all about them, and they know all about me. The real me. It was great, and we haven't been closer. And now it was the morning of our graduation. We are graduating from high school. I never thought I'd be here graduating high school, let alone surrounded by people who loved me.
I was getting ready in my room, wearing a nice dress and making sure I looked presentable.
"Del!" I hear from down the hall.
"Coming!" I yell back. I grab my graduation robe put it on, and walk out of my room, hat in hand.
I walk down the hall seeing Jess helping Jack with his shirt. Then dad walks out of the living room, keys in hand.
"Ready." He says.
"As I'll ever be."
And we were out driving to school. When we made it and parked just in time. I hope to get out of the car seeing my friends.
"Alright, I'm heading in. Don't forget to scream when you hear my name." I say to them before rushing to my friends.
Flynn and Julie see me, and we scream, "We're graduating!" We hug each other.
"Alright, girls. You're gonna blow out our eardrums." Luke says, wrapping his arm around Julie's shoulder.
Reggie walks to me, hugs me from behind, and kisses the top of my head. As we all laugh, I reminisce about how I got here and that if Homewood hadn't targeted me, I would have never met these people.
"It's about to start. Let's go." Flynn says.
They all walked ahead and stayed in my spot. Reggie sees I'm not next to me.
"You okay?" He asks, grabbing my hand.
I smile at him and kiss him, "Yeah. Let's go graduate."
I pull him, and we walk to the football field where graduation is held. We walked to our seats and waited for the principal to give a speech before our names were called. We were in line about to receive our diplomas when the principal started calling the group names.
"Alexander Mercer."
"Julie Molina."
"Flynn Parker."
"Luke Patterson."
"Reginald Peters."
"Delphine Salazar-Hotchner."
I walk across the stage as I hear all of the team in the stands cheering me on. When dad adopted me, I asked if I could hyphenate my last name, and he agreed, saying I should forget my parents. I walk back to my seat, smiling at my friends. We wait for the last name to be called when the principal talks again.
"May you now switch your tassel from your right side to your left?" We all do what he says, and he smiles.
"Congratulations to the graduating class of 2019." As soon as he finishes his sentence, every student throws graduation caps into the air. The group and I go into a group hug, just holding each other. Then we turn to give individual hugs to each other as well. Getting to Reggie, he kisses me and then hugs me.
"I love you, Del."
"I love you too, Reggie."
We smiled at each other and then headed back to the parking lot to our families after grabbing our hats from the ground. We all head to our families, hugging them and them congratulating all of us.
"I'm so proud of you, Del." Dad says, hugging me.
"Thanks, dad."
"Yeah, Del." Jack says, hugging my leg. I bend down and hug him back.
I pull away and ruffle his hair, "Thanks, Jack Jack." He smiles.
I stand up and hug Jess, "Congrats, Del."
"Thanks, Jess."
Pulling away from Jess, the rest of the team all go for a group hug, "We're so proud of you."
"I love you guys. Thank you." I say, then pull away, giving all of them a smile.
Although I had closed the chapter about being hunted by my brother, that wasn't the end of my story. We were all heading to college and going to make something of ourselves. Of course, the band was going for music, but the boys hoped to make it big enough that they didn't have to finish school. Julie, however, did want to finish school but did want to make it big. Flynn was going for management as she plans to become a famous manager to a bunch of popular artists, including Sunset Curve.
However, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. It was never on my mind before, not expecting even to graduate high school. But after Julie and Flynn found some poems and stories I've written in the past. They thought I should become a writer and that I would become famous with my stories. I didn't believe them saying that my stories were that great. But when they stole one of my stories, copied it, and handed them out to the entire school is when I saw just how much people liked my stories.
So here we are, my entire family celebrating my next chapter. Hoping it isn't as dramatic and traumatizing as the last one. And to think I said I would never have a happy life.
