Chapter 28

April 10th, Sunday

"Hey! Get up already!" The call immediately wakes me up from my bed. Is something going on!?

"Morning sunshine, it's way past for you to be sleeping." Sojiro is in my room with his white coat and fedora. "What time is it?" Ugh, I feel like I had a bad dream. "It's time for you to run the shop. We've got to get going already." It's far too early for Sojiro's sass today. "Run the shop? Where will you be going?"

"I've got to take this guy over to your school. He'll be attending there from now on." Sojiro points behind him. There standing behind is Akira. In his uniform, his face all smiles as he's holding back his laughter. He notices me see him and points to his mouth and draws a line down to his chin, before chucking softly. What? I feel around my face to feel a trace of something wet around my mouth. Frig! Quickly wiping away the saliva, I can't believe I was drooling in my sleep. "Anyway, everything you'll need until I get back is already made. We've got to get going now."

As soon as Sojiro turns, Akira's face returns to his classic deadpan in the game. This is early in the morning, and he's already getting on my nerves.

The clear sound of the bell from downstairs soon rings. I get up and stretch, then go foraging for my clothes to start on what's clearly going to be a long day today.

Luckily, almost no one came in today. At best an elderly couple came in today. They were the only company I had. It's practically a god sent honestly. It's already the afternoon and those two aren't back yet. It's been so quiet here since Sojiro isn't around to be ordering me around throughout the day. Might as well turn on the TV to just use it as background noise. The first story that shows up on the screen is that of a Subway accident that occurred a few minutes ago, just like in the game. I don't remember how many people were involved in this incident but I know that it was briefly mentioned by Sojiro later. The engineer was driven to desperation after having his shadow get targeted by that detective and that politician's goons. Luckily, the engineer didn't have a mental shutdown, but he was still left spiraling after this incident. The culprits stand at the very top regarding power, so even if I wanted to stop them, it'd be no different from them stepping on an ant when dealing with me right now. That's why I've got to get as strong as possible quickly.

The ringing of the bell snaps me out of my thoughts. Looking over, it wasn't the two men from this morning but an eccentric doctor in punk clothes. Instantly I lit up as she entered the shop. "Welcome! What would you like?"

I was probably too loud since her head shot up when she heard me. "What would you like, Takemi-san?" She quickly regains her composure and sits at the counter. "What a surprise to not see the chief here today. I'll get a black coffee, nothing special. Are you running the shop on your own today?"

"Yeah. Sojiro had to go to my school today." I get some coffee beans I thought she'd like and begin making her coffee.

"Caused some trouble there?"

"Me? Couldn't be. He had to introduce my roomate over there."

"Roomate? Someone else is living here with you?"

"Yeah, he came yesterday. Not gonna lie, he's a bit strange." Well, strange in the way that he isn't the same as in the game.

"You found someone stranger than you? Now that's something." I place her cup down in front of her.

Takemi and I talk for about an hour until she says her goodbyes and leaves. She seemed pretty tired and needed a break, but other than that she was pleasant to talk to. She even told me to come by soon so that we can do some more test trials, which honestly sent some shivers down my spine. The TV kept showing updates on the train incident by the hour. Tabloids about why such an event has already been circulating and people, in general, are feeling unsafe. The story is only just beginning but it doesn't take away from how scared people are feeling.
