A Job

A man with an eyepatch approached the family, knowing exactly who he was there for. He stopped in front of the 18-year-old girl.

"May I have a word with Miss Parker? Alone." He wasn't really asking by the tone of voice.

Charlie vaguely recognized the man from years ago. He wasn't a danger to Emilia. "Sure," he said, turning to their group. "You guys meet us at the restaurant, we won't be long."

Reluctantly, the group left Emilia with the strange man. "What can I do for you?" She asked.

"Miss Parker, it's more of what you can do for me. I'm here to make an offer."

"What kind of offer?" Emilia asked skeptically.

"I'm here to offer you a job. I'm director Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. and your potential has been brought to my attention. We wouldn't want it to go to waste."

Emilia thought over it for a moment. She'd heard of S.H.I.E.L.D from Charlie. She was about seven at the time, they were the ones that wanted to help search for her father.

"I wouldn't want it to go to waste either, but I just graduated, as you can see, and I have colleges lined up. I can't just turn down my dream schools to work for the government."
"If college is your only issue, S.H.I.E.L.D. can pay for it. I will personally do it. Training would begin this summer and you'd go to school while having a stable job. About 23 an hour starting for our agent's." She nearly passed out.

He produced a card from his pocket and handed it over. "Think it over and contact me with your decision. I look forward to hearing from you, Miss Parker."

"Yeah..." Emilia mumbled as he began walking away.

"So what was that all about?" Bella asked Emilia quietly at dinner.

"I don't know if I can really talk about it, but I was offered a job. Seems like it pays well too."
"How much an hour?" Bella questioned.
"About 23 starting."
"Emilia, if you don't take that job, I'm going to murder you and leave your body for the cougars. 23 starting? You'd be set!"

"I was considering it." Emilia admitted.
"Don't consider it, take the job. I don't even care what it is, don't pass up an opportunity like that."

"I'm convinced!" Emilia sighed dramatically. Elena giggled from beside her and she realized that the child had been listening.
"Don't say a word, Elena, you're sworn to secrecy." The younger girl made a zipper motion, locked her mouth, and threw away the key.

"So," Grayson began. "Any idea where you might go for college? I know you've had options and that you applied to a few."

"I got accepted into Stanford, Duke, UCLA, Whitmore, and NYU, of the ones I applied to. Kinda disappointed I didn't get into MIT, but I have 5 other options."

"It's good to have options. Have you considered who to say yes to?" Grayson pushed further.

"I was thinking Duke or Whitmore, just so I wouldn't miss out on anything important with Elena or Jeremy."

"Well whatever you decide, I'm sure we'll all be supportive." Miranda said, shooting her husband a look.
