I waited eagarly, staring down at my phone screen as the call came in. It was a number in my town, and of course it was unidentified as a contact. I knew who it was, though.
I slid the green answer button across the screen nervously. "Hello?" I asked.
"Um, hello? Is this Rachel?" The voice said back. The voice on the phone was sexy and deep, I could practically see the words slipping off his tongue. By then I knew that it was Calum who had called me.
"Uh, yeah. Calum?"
"Yup," he laughed into the phone, "the one and only!"
I laughed, but then an awkward silence filled the room as both of us quieted down. I realized that I didn't even know what to talk about so I panicked. "So, whatcha doing?" I asked awkwardly.
"Listening to music and talking to you," he said. His voice trailed off as if he wanted to ask me something, but he hesitated.
"What kind of music do you listen to?" I asked.
"Blink 182, Nirvana, all that kind of stuff. I love bands, they're kinda great," he said.
"Yeah, I love those bands!" I exclaimed.
There was a brief pause in the conversation before he said, "Hey, so do you want to come over to my house tomorrow? I mean, not like a date but uh... just as friends?" He asked.
My heart rate sped up. I can't believe a cute guy wants me to hang out with him! I tried to calm myself down before answering, if not to sound too eagar. "Yeah, I think that'd be fun."
~
I spent the next day preparing excitedly, simply because of the fact that no guy had ever asked me to "hang out" before. Stupid as it sounded, I was really nervous.
What do I wear? How do I do my hair? Do I dress fancy? Will there be pizza?
That afternoon I got ready two hours early, which left me a lot of time to relax before I left. I was looking for an outfit after straightening my hair when I heard a ding come from my phone.
C: Hey, just wondering if pizza was okay for dinner?
R: Of course! I love pizza!
C: Okay good :-) just making sure
I set my phone down and finished picking out my outfit. If we were just having pizza, we wouldn't be going out much. I put on a pair of comfy grey sweatpants with a black stripe running down the side and a plain black t-shirt.
I headed out the door and out to my car, pulling up the address for Calum's house.
~
I was greeted by Calum at the door with a big smile. His smile was one of my favorite things about him, thankfully he did it often.
"Hey Rachel!" I exclaimed, and I smiled back.
"Hey Calum!" I mimicked his excited tone and laughed at myself as he laughed along. I walked into the house, and it was pretty clean. Some random items were laying around and some trash was thrown about but to be honest, my house looked exactly the same (if not worse). I looked over and saw an older woman, pulling a cigarette to her mouth and blowing a cloud of smoke out into the air. I tried to keep in my cough, but I ended up coughing a bit anyway. I hated the smell of smoke. Her skin was a dreadful color, as well as being horribly wrinkled. She actually didn't seem that old, not older than 40 or so but with her appearance, she seemed like she could be 50. She looked over at me with a smirk on her face.
"Another girl, Calum? Really?" She questioned.
"Fuck off, Karen," Calum practically spat.
Calum grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hallway and into his room without any warning. He shut the door behind him and looked at me.
"Sorry," he said simply.
"Calum, what was that?" I exclaimed, rubbing my arm a bit.
"I'm sorry, I just don't want you being around her. I don't even like being around her, sometimes."
Something finsy clicked in my head. The woman was Calum's mom. But that couldn't be, he's nothing like her...
"Calum?"
"Yeah?"
"How many girls have you had here?"
"A few, I won't lie. But I've recently stopped," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.I looked down at my shoes. What if I'm really not that special?
"I didn't want you to meet her because she's a burnout, and she doesn't actually care about anything except getting drugs, having a new boyfriend every week, and ruining my life. You're nothing like her, and I don't want her ruining us," he said lightly.
"Ruining us?" I asked, looking up at his tall structure.
"I mean- no, I meant... Umm... I meant ruining you..!" He said frantically, throwing his hands around his neck and rubbing.
I laughed hard, smiling at him.
One thing was for sure, this was gonna be a good night.
