The failing system

****Emily's POV****

Wednesday June 15th
4:00pm

I slowly opened my eyes again
The last thing I remembered was the doctor giving me something and Olivia and him trying to calm me down.

I sat up slowly
My head didn't hurt as bad
I seen Sonny, Amanda, and Olivia talking to the doctor I remembered from earlier through the window leading into the hallway

I seen Olivia look in through the glass and she motioned, they all looked in and came in immediately.

"Hi Emily I'm Dr.Karev, you can call me Alex. I tried to do an exam on you when you was awake but you was triggered by the light."
Alex said

I nodded nervous

"How is your head feeling?"
Alex asked

I coughed and let out a deep breath

"It hurts but not as bad."
I croaked out

"Emily you have a pretty bad concussion that's almost a severe concussion, a black eye and some broken ribs."
Alex said

"My stomach don't hurt really."
I said weakly

"It's the medicine we have been given you helping keep your pain down, it's hard to give meds for concussions because we need to know how everything is going to be and monitor progress".
Alex said

"Ho-how long will I be here?"
I stuttered out

"I'd like to keep you here until Monday at least at the shortest time frame, but we will see how you are doing until then."
Alex smiled

I looked around at everyone

"Where's my brother?"
I asked nervous

"Emily we need to tell you something's."
Olivia spoke up

"Simon is dead isn't he?"
I said bluntly trying not to cry

"No he's not hunny, we promise."
Amanda said

"Well where is he?"
I asked

"Emily he has unfortunately slipped into a coma, he had a-lot more severe injuries than you did."
Alex frowned

I let out a deep breath

"That day when Simon and I was talking in mandarin we planned to run off again that night, he told me not to say anything. (Some tears fell down my face) we planned to not be found again. (I let out a deep breath) but unfortunately because I was hungry, this is where it got us. This is all my fault.."
I looked down

My eyes was beginning to burn
I was trying not to sob

"Hey hey."
Sonny said

Sonny sat down On the left side of my bed
I just really began to cry

"Emily look up at me."
Sonny said

I looked up and Sonny took my hand

"None of this, I mean none of this is your fault."
Sonny said

"If it's not whose is it then?"
I asked

Sonny looked at me

"It's Daryl's and Pam's Emily."
Olivia blurted out

We all looked At Olivia

"They both made a choice a very bad one and followed through with it."
Olivia said

"Maybe if I wasn't so bad then maybe Simon would be ok."
I cried harder

"Shh shh come here it's ok."
Sonny scooped me up and held me in his arms and I cried

I didn't know what to feel or even think right now.

****Sonny's POV****

7:00pm

I was sitting at my desk at the precinct thinking about today and how Distraught Emily was this afternoon, we stayed with her for an hour and then had to leave so she could rest
I couldn't stop thinking about her and Simon
It just wasn't fair
In all honesty another system fail

"Sonny."
Amanda said approaching my desk

"Yeah?"
I said looking up

"Are you ready to go home for the evening?"
Amanda asked

"The system failed these kids, another system fail."
I said

"Sonny.."
Amanda sat down

"Amanda it's not fair, it's not. We can't get pregnant and we got two kids here in this mess."
I said

"I know Sonny I know".
Amanda frowned

"Hey Amanda, Sonny."
Olivia approached us

We both looked at her

"The judge has put remand on Pam, she won't be getting out until trial."
Olivia smiled

"Best news all day huh."
I said

"So what happens to Simon and Emily now?"
Amanda asked

Olivia let out a deep breath

"Well Emily will be in the hospital until Monday at least, and then Simon still being in a coma. They're still in the state's custody. We'll look to try to find them a home, one that will take them both. The bad thing is it's hard finding a family who will willingly take an older teen Simon's age mostly foster homes want kids Emily's age and younger or you unfortunately end up with ones like Pam and Daryl."
Olivia said

"It's just not fair."
I blurted out

"System failed these kids too."
I added

"I know Sonny, I know."
Olivia frowned

"Hey it's been a long day, you two take tomorrow off, and that's not a request."
Olivia said

"Thanks Liv".
Amanda smiled

Amanda and I headed home and it was a quiet drive, I drove not knowing what to say

"Do you wanna do carry-out tonight?"
Amanda asked

"I'm not really hungry."
I looked at Amanda then back at the road

"Sonny."
Amanda put her hand on my leg

We pulled into the garage and I shut off the car, we got out and headed into the house

"I gotta go to the bathroom real quick."
I said

I instantly went into the bathroom, shut the door and began to puke.
I washed up and opened the door

"Sonny was you puking?"
Amanda stood there with tears in her eyes

"Yeah, I'm ok. Just my nerves."
I said

Amanda frowned

"Sonny tell me what's wrong."
Amanda grabbed my hand

"It's just fair. I know what it's like Amanda with the foster care system, these kids have been through hell, I went through hell, Amanda this case really is bothering me."
I began to cry

"Do you want me to ask Liv to take us off the case?"
Amanda asked

"No, no."
I wiped my eyes

"What can I do?"
Amanda asked

"I don't know".
I said
