Ember looked out the window anxiously.
She wasn't worried at all about Bethany interfering, but, what if they found out that she was a Drainer.
She leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms over her chest. She watched the screen in the front seat, they were just a few minutes away from their target who appeared to be moving every two seconds.
At least it was proof that the person was alive.
"You sure we're not tracking down a wild rat, the person seems to be moving a lot" said Nicholas with a smile as he looked at Koi whose eyes were darting from the screen back to the road.
Koi scoffed "humans tend to move a lot you know. But yeah, we do take a lot after rats"
"Like their cuteness and brains? Rats are very smart" said Nicholas.
Koi looked at him "I don't know about cuteness" she mumbled. "But sure they're smart"
"Uh huh" he replied with a sly smile.
Ember bristled. She wished he would just stop flirting with everyone he sees and just focus on their job.
Well he is just doing his job, get close to a person and drain them. This is all part of the plan.
She reassured herself as she relaxed her tense shoulders.
She always got tense when she saw Nicholas flirting with someone else, but she just needed to tell herself that it was all an act which it was!
She hoped.
A shudder rolled through her body.
Koi groaned in frustration "we are never gonna get him if he's moving every two seconds!"
Nicholas looked at the screen like he had just looked at it for the first time "he is?"
"YES!" said Koi as if it were that obvious (which it was)
Ember rolled her eyes ''we're in a literal hover car! We can go faster than this"
"Exactly, but the battery is nearly dead" Koi said as her knuckles tightened around the wheel, "but I think there should be enough battery to give the car a little boost" she mumbled to herself as her fingers grazed over the controls.
The hovercar had a small burst of energy and they zoomed forward, throwing Ember back into her seat.
They sped around the corner and stopped almost as quickly as they had started.
Koi carefully landed the hovercar onto the grassy ground, she threw off her harness and pressed a button by the wheel which killed the engine.
She stepped out of the vehicle, and Ember unbuckled her harness and the door next to her slid open, a whiff of the odors coming from the city met her senses and she wrinkled her nose.
She stepped out of the vehicle and the door closed behind her.
Koi walked around the back of the vehicle with the tracking device in hand, she looked at it and exhaled.
"Well, we must travel on foot now" she said as she turned towards a big cluster of trees.
Ember suddenly had the urge to pull her cloak over her mess of curls, but she remembered she was not a Drainer, at least not now.
Nicholas walked ahead, following Koi as she trekked through the thick trees. Ember rubbed her bare arms as a chilly breeze ruffled through her hair, she climbed over a fallen tree with dead branches.
Ember yelped as a small branch caught on a coil of her hair, she yanked the strand out of the branches and sent a scowl towards the tree.
Koi watched the tracker and her brow furrowed in confusion "he seems to have stopped"
Nicholas sent Ember a look.
Bethany must have beat them to him.
Koi looked back at them "he is just over to those trees over there" she said as she broke into a sprint, Ember hopped over tree branches and ran behind Koi who had already made her way over to a very tall fir tree.
Nicholas stopped and slid behind a tree.
Ember froze as she saw the person they were hunting down, Carl Mitchell, but he was with someone.
Someone with dirty blond hair and ripped jeans.
It was Bethany.
Why wasn't she in her uniform?
Ember narrowed her eyes but her stomach was doing backflips. She looked at Koi who was hiding behind a tree with confusion etched on her face.
Koi's face hardened and she pulled out her stun gun, she turned the dial that showed the different stun levels, she turned it to the first setting. Just to be safe Ember told herself.
Bethany twirled her hands around to her pocket and spun back around to face Carl, she extended a hand to his face and a dagger made of blue light appeared in her hand.
Ember's eyes widened.
She was going to kill him.
Ember hopped up with her stun gun in hand "Hey!" she yelled.
Bethany halted, the dagger disintegrating in her hand.
Carl looked terrified and his eyes darted from Bethany to Ember, Ember walked down the hill and adjusted the settings on the gun to the last setting.
The stun level was so high it could have lifelong effects on the person and possibly death.
"Ember!" Koi hissed "what are you- ugh you know what-"
Koi stepped out from behind Ember and Nicholas followed.
"Hey whatcha doing?" said Bethany with a nervous giggle.
"Taking a little stroll. How about you?"
Bethany glared at Ember as if she were the worst creature to ever live on this planet.
Koi walked up to Bethany "listen I don't want to hurt you but we have to ask that you step away from Mr. Mitchell and place your hands over your head.
Bethany snorted "like I'd do that"
Ember snarled "You'd better listen to her or it will get very bloody very fast"
Bethany smirked and stepped closer to Ember.
Ember's fingers tightened around the trigger.
Koi glanced at Ember then back at Bethany.
"Take a step back and put your hands over your head, last warning." Koi warned.
Bethany raised an eyebrow "or what?" she said.
"Or we'll shoot!" Koi said as if it were obvious.
"With a little stun gun? Come on be real no-"
Ember pulled the trigger.
Bethany had fallen and trembled violently and whimpered like a neglected animal. Her breaths game out in short gasps as she shudders violently onto her back.
Koi glared at Ember "YOU IDIOT! YOU JUST SHOT HER WITH THE MOST DANGEROUS SETTING!" she yelled as she placed her gun in her holster on her belt.
Ember slowly lowered her gun taking in what she had just done.
She had just shot Bethany.
With the highest stun level and by far the most dangerous.
Koi walked up to Ember and grabbed her by the vest, "WE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO USE THAT SETTING UNLESS WE WERE ABOUT TO GET KILLED! YOU JUST JEOPARDIZED OUR JOBS!"
Koi shoved Ember and crouched down to examine Bethany who was trembling with her eyes rolled to the back of her head.
She looked at Nicholas for support, but all she got was coldness in his gray eyed gaze. He looked at her like she was a murderer.
For all she knew, she was
