Asher
The next morning
"So, what kind of prank are you gonna pull?" Evangeline asks me in a Low voice, her anthracite eyes twinkling. I shrug, sticking my hand further into the bag. "Dunno yet." The twins are getting ready upstairs, having overslept again, while Lucas is making breakfast in the kitchen.
I didn't get the opportunity to do anything yesterday, since our older siblings had various activities to attend to. Plus, true to Evie's word, the two of us did spend the entire afternoon finishing the load of homework given by the teachers.
My fingers grasp cold metal. I pull the item out of the bag. "Ooh. Handcuffs. The things you could do with those." Evie grins wickedly, motioning for me to pass them over.
"The cuff screws are in really tight," she murmurs, eyes fixed to the one of the silver cuffs in her hand as she attempts to pull it apart.
"Got it." She says triumphantly, snapping the cuff onto her wrist. It closes with a click.
"What are you monkeys up to?" Evie and I jump when the voice of my-our brother sounds in our ear. "Nothing!" She hides the handcuffs behind her back with a huge smile. Chris chuckles. "Rubbish." His attention falls to the bag on the table, contents spilling out. He lifts a brow. "For your information, pranks won't work on us. What kinda scheme are you concocting?"
Evangeline blinks up at him with a dazzlingly innocent smile. "Dear brother, we're totally not planning anything!" I suppress the amused smile tugging at the corners of my mouth.
Quick s a flash, Chris reaches for the bag. "I'm gonna tell Luke and Max!"
Evie squeaks. Without thinking, I knock the bag off the table and lunge forward, slipping the other cuff onto Chris's outstretched hand. Click. My brother and Evangeline shoot me bewildered expressions, before bursting into laughter. "Did you think that would stop me?" Chris guffaws. "I didn't really mean that. In fact, I actually would've joined in!"
My face flushes. "My bad," I mumble. Just then, Lucas and Max arrive. "Woah. What's going on?" Our eldest brother sets a tray with toast and cheese on the table.
"Long story." Evie shares a grin with me and Chris. "Asher. Now will you separate us? There's a keyhole here, so there should be a key to unlock the handcuffs in the bag or something." I shove a piece of cheesy bread into my mouth and bend over to begin digging through the bag on the floor.
"Hey, Asher. You done? I wanna eat," Chris grumbles. A muffled sound ensues, so I assume someone stuck food in his mouth. My heartbeat quickens. "Uh, guys..." I turn the whole damn thing upside down. Everything inside tumbles out with a clatter. I scan the floor. Then rummage around in the bag to see if there's anything.
When I straighten and meet their wide-eyed gazes, I know they've already guessed. "Don't tell me..." Evangeline groans.
Shit just hit the fucking fan.
