You roll onto your back once more and kick with your other foot as best you can as the monster pulls you free of the lab and across the vines coating the roads. It doesn't help at all, the vice-grip it had on you not faltering once. Your outfit was beginning to shred open, the wounds to your back splitting more the further he dragged you.
After a while you pass out from the sheer agony of it all, your mind rendering you unconscious so you didn't have to deal with the pain anymore.
A deep blackness took over, one you thought infinite and the entrance to your own personal afterlife. The beginning of the end, the peace you didn't realise you wanted, let alone needed.
That is, of course, until your eyes begin to peel open, your mind drifting back to consciousness once more as your skin starts to ache where it was broken, flesh hanging limply from wounds on your back as the sharp jolts of torment return.
You whimper as you try to move, tears that you couldn't control spilling from your eyes and blurring your vision. Where am I? You ask yourself, the wooden paneling of the room slowly beginning to come into view.
"You're awake." A deep grumble of a voice, inhuman almost, startles you and you bolt up into a sitting position, trying desperately to see in the darkness of the room where it came from. "Who's there?" You ask, voice broken and crackled from the years of not being used.
"Is it really you, Two?" It asks again and you flinch at the uttering of your name. "I knew I could feel you close by at last. I've been waiting for you to find me." A chuckle, humorless yet dark and twisted, startles the air around you as this new creature steps into the light. "I knew you would. Though I must say, you took your time."
It looked like a man from the silhouette at first, but now? You trembled to behold the sight of him, heart racing as you scramble away from it, unable to even register his words from the fear in your gut. His entire body was a deep red and covered in slithering vines, eyes a pale white and nose non-existent apart from the two holes that remained of his nostrils. One of his hands was long and clawed, twitching by his side as he steps closer the more you move away from him. "Calm yourself. Look at me." He commands, dropping onto one knee in front of you as your movements away from him cease upon your back hitting a wall.
Your chest was heaving as he got closer, panicked breaths rising higher and higher as you turned your face away from him and closed your eyes, soft whimpers the only sound from you.
To say you were afraid would have been an understatement. This monster before you was the single most terrifying thing you'd ever encountered and the only thing you could think was... This is it... This is when I die.
A girl who barely had a chance to live, suffering and dying in some unknown place where she'd never be found.
"Look... At me..." He says, more sternly this time and you let hot tears roll over your cheeks as you resist the urge to do as he says. This way you could pretend between times when he spoke that he wasn't even there. That he was just some figment of your imagination.
That is until he raises his smaller hand and, with his fingertips against your chin that you fail to flinch away from, he guides your face to look at him. "Remember me, little one."
Little one.
The nickname hits you hard, the urge to look at him suddenly winning out as you give in and let him have your gaze. You look over his horrific visage, watching the way his skin seemed to crawl, blistered and broken. His eyes held this amused knowledge to them, like he was finding humor in watching you recognise him.
And recognise him you did.
Though the nickname had been the trigger, you could see his face beneath the monster clear as day.
