It was so stupid of you to get yourself ready like this. Primping and preening until you looked pretty but you weren't satisfied and you knew it was because you were nervous. You style your hair in just the way you knew he'd like it and put on some makeup to enhance your features.

Then you slip into that same pale blue tea dress you'd worn that day in the wildflower meadow and some simple white sneakers. You still couldn't crack high heels and for a night like tonight it was probably better if you didn't fall into the diner like a newborn giraffe. So it was flats and a white cardigan to match.

Not your usual style these days, but it looked cute enough to pass and everything else felt just... Wrong. Your bedroom was strewn with forgotten items that hadn't worked for you. This was the best you had right now and you didn't have time to change anymore.

The clock ticks on and you curse. You were late. The cab was only just pulling up though so it couldn't be all your fault.

You hop in and sit in the back, nervously tapping on your exposed knee. The driver says nothing just turns on the radio to some crappy pop station. You almost miss what he'd said as he pulls up to the diner, but it was your total so you toss more than he needs at him and get out.

He thanks you but you don't really hear it, just look up at the big neon sign in trepidation.

The bell above the door tinkles as you enter, Amanda the hostess greeting you as you get inside. "Hey, sweetie. We missed ya last night, everything okay?"

"Fine. I'm uhh--"

"Usual spot?" She asks, but you'd trailed off as you looked around the diner. It was quiet, hardly anyone inside but there, in a little booth by the window, was the back of a head you very much recognised. He came

You get a little choked up, emotions running higher than ever and heart hammering in your chest. "No-- uhh.." You begin, unable to take your eyes off of him.

"I see." She smiles at you, not that you were paying attention to it. "Have a seat, honey. I'll be over in a little bit."

You finally look back at her though it's only to flash her a grateful smile. She sends you a look in response that says 'let me know if you need anything' before going off back to her station. Your shoes thud quietly against the solid floor as you approach Steve who was looking absently out of the window.

Your chest was swelling the closer you got and you're not sure if it's nerves or gratitude that he'd shown up. "Steve..?" You mumble weakly as you stop just to his side, not sitting yet. He looked just as anxious as you when he turns at the mention of his name, swallowing thick as large eyes take a quick, darting look over your form.

"H-Hi.." He says and hearing his voice after so long absent of it both warms and shatters the feeble organ in the hollow cavity of your chest. You sit across from him, fingers knotting on the table.

You couldn't stop staring at him. You should. You know that.

But it was the first time in what felt like forever that you were able to look at him up close without interruption. Your memories of him didn't do him justice at all, though he looked a little more tired than he did in your mind. He was blinking at you, lips dropping open and closed a few times as he thinks of what to say.

"I-- Uh, got you a shake. You still like banana?" He asks, clearing his throat awkwardly. It's honestly the first time you notice the two large glasses of banana shake with red striped straws sticking out of them.

"Oh. Yeah, that's.. that's fine." Your voice was strained, tense. Sighing lowly, you settle back in your seat, fingertips tapping against the side of the glass as you level your gaze with his own. "I didn't think you'd come."
