STEVE'S POV.

An owl hoots loudly outside of the Winnebago. Crickets chirrup and the gentle evening breeze whips through the canvas curtains, sending a chill down Steve's spine. Erica, Lucas and Max had just been dropped off at the Creel house - Step one.

There was a plan. Sort of. It was a good plan, but he still found himself struggling to keep his nerve in the face of such a terrible danger.

They'd barely gotten out alive the last time they had been in the grips of Vecna and that had been thanks to.. Well, you. Your sacrifice had been the one that saved them, that gave them this shot. But then, he couldn't help but wonder if they'd even need to be in this fight were it not for you.

He wasn't paying attention. The others hadn't noticed, but he snaps his attention back to Nancy as she speaks anyway. She was going over the plan once more, Eddie and Dustin at the back of the motorhome while Steve stood beside a sitting Robin.

"Okay. I want to run through it one more time. Phase one?"

"Meet Erica at the playground. She'll signal Max and Lucas when we're ready." Robin answers.

"Phase two?"

Steve swallows thick before speaking, a nausea to his stomach that wouldn't seem to dissipate and was only getting worse. It was fear. He knew it. But he couldn't show it. "Max baits Vecna. He'll go after her which'll put him in his trance."

"Phase three."

"Me and Eddie draw the bats away." Dustin had spoken quietly, lips pursing to mask the trepidation on his doughy features. Eddie smiles and plants a hand to his head, shaking it affectionately in attempt to offer some support in his own strange way.

Steve was undoubtedly jealous of Eddie at first. He'd grown such a bond with Dustin in ways Steve wasn't able to on account of the fact he wasn't a nerd. But now? Steve found himself growing fonder of him, even opening up to the idea of a friendship once all this was over. Sure, the guy was a little weird and chaotic but so were most of Steve's friends these days. He was sure there'd be a permanent spot in the group for Eddie should he want it.

Steve offers him a strained smile before returning his glance to Nancy. "Phase four, we go into Vecna's hopefully bat free lair and..." Robin trails off, raising one of the prepared bottles, a red rag sticking from the mouth of it like a petulant tongue. "Flambé."

"Nobody moves on from the prior phase until we've copied. Nobody deviates from the plan no matter what." Nancy warns, the fear clear on her face though she was doing an excellent job of trying to hide it. Steve knew her better, though. "Got it?"

"Got it." He mumbles his agreement, thick brows furrowing.

Showtime.

-------------------------------------------------

The five of them looked so strange as they ran through the trailer park, shrouded by darkness and each clutching to their weapons. Steve himself had picked up an axe; just in case of errant vines. He wasn't risking it after last time. He could still feel the tight yet steady pressure of how they'd encased him, rendering him helpless.

Dustin and Eddie had their metal shields and handmade spears at the ready. It looked like all of them, even Nancy with her gun and Robin with her Molotov's, were ready for all out war.

Steve opens the door to Eddie's trailer and flicks the light on, illuminating the pulsing hole in the ceiling the seemed to thrum with a mysterious energy, filling the room with hues of amber and crimson.

He's first to grab the rope of bedsheets, indisputeably the most athletic of those present so taking the lead when it came to getting through to that horrific wasteland once more. He climbs quickly and drops expertly to the ground on the other side, boots colliding with hard floor in a heavy thud.
