STEVE'S POV.

He was pressing delicate, feather-light kisses along the softened plains of your abdomen, your legs draped lazily around his waist as he was slotted between them. You'd both been cuddled up on the couch, watching some crappy reruns on the T.V. when Steve naturally got distracted.

You didn't mind. You kept smiling down at him in that way that made his chest thump wildly, a carefree grin settled on his own lips in between gentle kisses to your stomach.

His brows had furrowed in thought while he looked down at it, large hands smoothing over the plush flesh. "What is it?" You'd asked him, quirking his attentions which swiftly return to your stunning features.

He chews his lip, a little apprehensive to ask the question plaguing his mind but he was so comfortable around you that he knew you wouldn't judge him for it. After all, you'd been together for months now, and sexually active for a subjectively beautiful few of them. "You ever, uhh.. Thought about having kids?" He asks shyly, rushing to ramble further. "Not now--obviously. Jesus. Definitely not now, I'm just uh.. Just curious, that's all on what you might... Ever... Think about it. Considering we're.. Y'know.."

It had taken you by surprise for sure, lips dropping open and closed a number of times before you could form some kind of response. Your big wide eyes flit over his own, trying to figure out where the thought had come from, he thinks.

But just as he knew you wouldn't judge his question, you knew he wouldn't judge your answer.

"No." You say plainly, a weak smile on your lips to offer comfort at the way his face falls. And it had been the truth; you couldn't even begin to see yourself in the role of a parent. What did you have to go off of? Henry? Because he sure as hell wasn't anything good to learn from and your own parents had either deserted you or died before they had a chance to offer you any lessons. "Not at all, to be honest. I'm not-- I wouldn't--" You struggle for the words, sighing softly and avoiding his gaze. "I'm not the kind of girl who gets things like that, Steve. I'd be a terrible mom."

You laughed it off, but Steve saw the leveled seriousness to your eyes. The way you'd already started to close off to the idea of it. It made him feel a fraction dejected but he understood considering your troubled childhood at the orphanage.

So he dropped it. Reserved to the idea of never having children with you, but happy nonetheless so long as you were in his life.

"How's the handling?" The small voice of his female companion draws Steve from his daydream. The road ahead was empty and he'd almost forgotten himself and what they were doing. After deciding they were going back to the Upside Down to finish Vecna off for good, they figured they would need weapons and protection.

Eddie had suggested a local store that sold various weaponry and necessities and that had been the plan. For now. He'd hotwired a motorhome and given Steve the wheel. They'd all raced out of there quick but now that the road was clear and the drive was slow, Steve had found himself drifting off into his own mind.

'Fire and Rain' by James Taylor droned quietly on the radio as he looks to Nancy in the passenger side, the rest of the group finding purchase in different areas of the back, out of earshot.

"Not half bad," Steve comments, schooling his features to that stoic impassiveness to mask how he really felt. The daydream hurt. All memories of you hurt and yet he couldn't stop his treacherous mind from showing you to him constantly. "Considering that this is a house."

Nancy chuckles and nods, not bothering to respond as she watches the road ahead of her. The sun shone through the cracks of the leaves that littered the trees along the roadside, smattering the tarmac with hues of golden yellow. For what it was worth, it was a beautiful day. Spring was well and truly in action and it would have been great to see were it not for the current situation.
