Dalia lay with her long black hair situated all around her face on the small twin bed. Sunshine burned on her face, shining brightly through the window. It was already two o'clock in the afternoon, and she hadn't done anything productive yet. She didn't have work and was in trouble with Anita.
Whenever she left the bedroom, Anita would shoot sharp glares and grumble rude comments under her breath. After breakfast Dalia had decided to just remain in her and Maria's room. But that resulted in her being bored. The flower shop was closed, Maria had snuck away with Tony again, and Riff still hadn't stopped by.
At this point, she would run after him just to have something to do. Other than listening to her sister mutter insults. After a couple minutes, she heard a loud knock on her bedroom door.
"Dalia! Me siento muy enfermo...can you run to Docs? Please!"Dalia sat up straight at her sister's voice, the tone concerned her. And all thoughts of their fight faded from her mind as she grabbed her wool jacket and started out of the room. "Of course, ¿estómago?" Dalia asked, shoveling her arms through the jacket while her sister groaned clutching her abdomen.
Anita forced out a nod which gave Dalia all the information she needed. She slipped on a pair of shoes then ran out of the door. She hurried out of the building, then began speed walking towards the pharmacy. Despite her and Anita's fights, she still didn't want Anita to suffer. Dalia just decided after she got the medicine, she would go back to ignoring her.
After walking about 5 blocks, and turning 3 times, she arrived at the small pharmacy. She took a few steps through the door and heard the sound of a small bell ringing as she entered. The old woman behind the counter looked up and gave her a kind smile.
"Hola, do you need any help?"
"Sí, I need medicine for a stomach ache?"
Valentina nodded and turned around looking through a couple of bottles on the shelf. She hummed to herself as she grabbed a small box then placed it on the counter. "Tums should do the trick." Dalia grabbed the small box and read every detail she could, then nodded and grabbed a couple dollars from her jacket pocket.
"So...I've seen you and your friend running around with Tony and Riff."
Dalia's eyes shot up from the money she was counting to see Valentina looking at her with a knowing smirk. She chuckled nervously, and placed the 10$ onto the counter. "Um, Sí...they're nice boys." Dalia smiled awkwardly, now grabbing the box as Valentina took the cash beginning to calculate the change.
"HA! Nice boys...Eso es gracioso..."
"Well, they're better than most gringos."
"Low bar." Valentina muttered, which made Dalia giggle as she grabbed the box and tucked it safely into her wooly pocket. Then took the 35 cents in her other pocket, Valentina smiled, then turned and glanced out the front window.
"Oh no...Go into the basement." Valentina instructed, now walking around the counter and opening a door that had a stair set right on the other side. "¿Perdón?" Dalia wondered, as Valentina grabbed her hand and began pulling her towards the door.
"Please, trust me. Go in the basement, if Tony comes back tell him to also stay down until I come get you."
Dalia contemplated for a moment, Anita was in pain at home and needed the medicine. But at the same time, Valentina seemed very persistent. After a couple seconds, she sighed. "Please hurry." The woman nodded then nearly pushed her down the stairs, but Dalia just took a couple steps and waited for her to close the door. She climbed back up until she was right in front of the door.
She placed her ear against the wooden door, careful to avoid any peeling paint or splinters, and listened carefully.
The bell rang a few times, signaling the door opening and closing a couple of times. And the voices she heard from beyond the door nearly caused her to go falling backwards and into the basement. But she caught herself on the railing, only stumbling back slightly. She pressed her ear against the door again to double check.
"Hey brittle bones."
