"Okay, that's a g chord-"

Thwang.

"That's not a g chord."

I watch from the small light green chair in the living room as Luke attempts to teach Ollie how to play guitar. Oliver hasn't played an instrument in his life, considering he's eight, so this is a bit of a challenge. But Luke has surprising patience.

"Now just put your middle finger here," Luke says gently. The way he talks to children intrigues me. He talks to Oliver as if he's the same age as Luke, only with a lighter, sweeter, and softer tone in his voice. It's not like the baby voice that most people use. And that's refreshing.

"Like this?" Ollie smiles, putting his finger in the place that Luke instructed. He looks at me with a proud grin before nodding to the small boy. "Exactly."

I watch Luke as he teaches Oliver some basic chords. He seems to understand the techniques, but I can tell by some of Luke's expressions that Oliver is doing some things a little... well, wrong.

"No, it doesn't work that way, Oliver." Luke says sternly when he's asked if he can just put his fingers anywhere to make a chord. Oliver then proceeds to strum his blue kiddy guitar as fast as he can while wiggling his fingers around like worms.

"Alright, Jimi Hendrix, chill out," Luke chuckles. He's often told me of the times when he was a kid when he'd listen to these rock songs on the radio and he'd dream of being able to play that well. It might be that Ollie wants that too.

Luke tries to teach Oliver some easy songs, consisting of The Abcs and Mary Had a Little Lamb. I make us some snacks and they take a little break.

"How do you like working with kids?" I ask Luke as he walks into the kitchen and wraps his arms around my waist.

"He's a cool dude. He reminds me of myself." Luke says, yawning a little bit. I can tell he's exhausted from the day at school and from working with Ollie.

"We can go lay down or something if you wanna call it a day," I tell him. He nods and rests his head on my shoulder.

I get some food in Oliver and tell him Luke will continue the lesson tomorrow. He nods excitedly and hurries up and eats while Luke and I retire to my room. We lay down and he holds me, playing with my hair.

"We're working on a new song," he comments. I look up at him and study his jawline. "Mmm, what about?"

"A certain American girl," Luke chuckles. "It's intense, man, you'll either love me for it or hate me for it." I roll my eyes.

"I'm not about you disclosing our personal life in songs, mister." I say. He's already done it before. He chuckles softly.

"Too late, Mrs."

"You mean miss? Mrs. applies that I'm married."

"Married to me."

"No."

"Too late."

"Whatever. Hey, when's the last time you checked on your half of the science project?" I ask him. His eyes widen a little.

"Crap. I think the plants are still alive. When's that due?" He asks. I think about it. It's been so long...

"In like two weeks." I say. It's insane to think that about three months ago we hated each other. Now I love him to pieces.

"Luke?" I ask softly, looking up at him. He's so much bigger than me. Yet he acts like he's five years old. "Mhmm?"

"Can you sing to me?" I ask him. I love his voice but he doesn't really like to sing to me that much. He gets so shy and nervous. He nods, his cheeks tinted pink.

I get comfy as he sings to me a song that I've never heard before. I don't pay much attention to the words. Mostly just his voice. It's always been able to calm me and soothe me.

I place my head on his chest and close my eyes, focusing on the melody coming from Luke's lips. It's sweet and calm.

At one point, I'm half asleep and warm and cuddly. He kisses my head and tells me to take a nap. "I'll be here when you wake up, I promise." He says. That's all the motivation I need to drift off to sleep.
