*Hours Before*
The day was like any other day. Woke up too early, rushed through too many people. It was too much. But I was used to it.
Just like how I was used to the bugging and mockery from a certain little blonde nuisance.
Every day it's the same. The same stupid things he says. The same things he does to tick me off. The same old crap.
I run through it in my head. I'll turn the corner and he'll be there with his little posse. 'Sup, Livi.' I'll roll my eyes. 'Shut up, Luke.'
I turn the corner. Sure enough.
"Sup, Livi." He smirks. I glare at him. I hate when he calls me that. That's my nickname. But I never gave him permission to use it.
"Shut up, Luke." I snap. Him and his friends giggle. I tell myself to let it go and walk to my locker.
I gather my things for my class. As soon as I shut the locker door, there appears my best friend, Lil. Her full name is Lilian Rose, but she goes by Lil. She is completely the opposite of me. Her hair is light blue with light purple at the end. She is taller than me, and also a year older. But we still are a perfect fit.
"Hey, Lil," I say. Before even saying anything, she frowns. "What's up with ya'?" She asks, her thick accent that I rarely notice shining through. I'm the only one here without an accent like theirs. We moved to Australia a long time ago, but I never acquired one. "The usual." I reply, turning towards the hall. She follows me down it.
"Y'know, Olivia, maybe you should let it go." She says. I look at her and frown. She sighs.
"You have a literal obsession with Luke Hemmings." She says. I nearly trip over my own feet.
"Excuse me?" I choke. I do not have an obsession with him. Never in a million years. She gives me a look.
"All you do is think about how much you hate him. Every day. 'He's such an ass.' 'He's such a twat.' 'He needs to lay off the hater-ade.' Like seriously, Olivia, these are things you say. Every day. At least three times." She says. I groan.
"Do you know what he does to me?" I say. She rolls her eyes.
"All he does is push your buttons. He literally does nothing else to you." She says. "You just let it bother you to the point where you think he wants you dead."
"If he could kill me, he would." I mumble. "Olivia!" She whines. We stop in front of Mr. Johnson's room. I always walk Lil to her class before going to mine. "Be strong, Livi," she says dramatically. I roll my eyes. "Whatever."
I continue down the hall, just thinking of what rude thing he'll do next. We have every class together. And as soon as I walk in that door, he'll grin at me and say something stupid.
Maybe I am obsessed.
Nah.
I get to Miss Stephanie's class. She's our homeroom teacher. I go inside. Half of the typical-looking high school classroom is already filled. Our teacher, Miss Stephanie, is standing at the board, writing something in chalk. Half of the boys watch her. She's young, a newly graduated college student. She's also gorgeous. Blonde, tall, pretty eyes. The guys like her body. I roll my eyes and take my seat.
There's a tap on my shoulder. I want to turn around and smack him..
"What?" I snap, turning around. Luke smiles at me. "Nothing. Just wanted to say hello." He says. I give him a look and turn back around. He chuckles.
All the rest of the class gets here, and class starts. All throughout it, Luke is kicking on my chair. Multiple times I kick his foot for it, but he doesn't stop.
"You're in fourth grade." I whisper to him when our teacher isn't looking. He chuckles quietly. "Actually, second."
I roll my eyes. She gives us our assignments and we're off to the next class.
The next few hours fly quick. Soon it's our last class before lunch. We go ahead in and take seats. Once again, Luke is behind me. Great.
"Alright," she calls out. She is by far my least favorite teacher. She's loud and likes to yell. And she isn't very nice.
"Settle down!" She says loudly. Everyone hushes. She starts talking about the yearly science fair we have to do. I sigh.
I hear someone humming something. I turn around. Luke. I make a face at him. He makes a face back.
'She's going to yell at you.' I mouth. He does a weird thing with his eyebrows that looks like a frown, but not quite as concerned. 'Since when do you care?' He mouths back. I roll my eyes and turn back around.
"The science fair is mandatory for everyone." She says. One of the boys in the back, Calum, one of Luke's dumb friends, raises his hand. Luke breaks into a grin, expecting something stupid, like the rest of us. "Yes, Mr. Hood." Ms. Mateo says. Calum smiles like an idiot.
"So, it's mandatory for us to attend, right? So we don't have to participate?" He asks. Luke shakes his head and a few people in the class break into chuckles. I rub my temples.
"It is mandatory to participate and to attend, Mr. Hood." Ms. Mateo says. A look of fake realization crosses his face. "Ohhhh!" He says. The whole class giggles.
Ms. Mateo turns around and heads back to her board, sighing on the way. "Anyway, I've assigned your partners this year, as last year, there were a few complications with the partnering." She says. Everyone looks at Luke and Calum. Last year, them and the other two boys they hang out with teamed up and made a rocket. It worked, alright, but it was powered on slime, and shot it everywhere when it shot up.
They just grin at each other. I huff.
"I'll read the list." Ms. Mateo says. She goes down, naming random pairs. I listen only for two names: Mine and Luke's. Once I hear either before the other, I'll know I'm safe.
My ears perk up when I hear the first few sounds of my name.
"Olivia Parker"
I wait for the and.
"and Luke Hemmings."
