IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT. LIL and I are at the boys' concert. It's at a fairly small venue, but it's still a bit cramped. There are surprisingly a lot of people. Not that they're bad. Just that they aren't really big at all.
We're right by the small, half-circle stage, sitting at a two person table. The tables aren't really made for more than a few people, and are raised, like the slightly uncomfortable black stools that are placed with them. The room is musty and foggy, and lit up by the colored stage lights. It's mostly blue and red inside, but it's pinkish where we are due to the positioning of the red light. The air carries the smell of spilled, stale alcohol along with the loud voices that aren't quieted until someone steps onstage.
It's a man who is shorter and dressed all in black. He announces that there are two more bands coming on, a band called Jet Blacke and then the guys. He is almost completely disregarded until he utters, "5 Seconds of Summer," which causes the audience to cheer immensely. Lil and I exchange confused glances. Barely anyone knows about them, to our knowledge, at least. "They must've paid a ton of people to come out," Lil mutters to me loudly so I can here. It makes me laugh. It's just a joke, of course, but they must've been hiding their popularity from us, as we had no idea. "Maybe they were just being humble," I murmur back to her.
The band Jet Blacke comes on, and not to our surprise, they're wearing all black, and their instruments are all black as well. The crowd, though they were more excited for our boys, seem to really enjoy Jet Blacke, who are a lot more punk than the guys. Lil leans over to me, "I'm worried they'll pump up the crowd more than 5SOS will," she almost yells in my ear. I shoo her off with my hand, "Nah, our boys are good,"
We dance along with the crowd to the pop-punk band, with sad little cups of soda instead of alcohol. Lil was planning to get us some actual drinks, but I told her that it's better to risk her fake ID at an actual bar or club, and not just a little music joint. So we have fun without being drunk, which, contrary to popular belief these days, is very possible.
Soon enough, Jet Blacke heads offstage and we watch roadies set up for the guys. The anticipation is bubbling up within me, and I want to explode. I am so nervous and excited to see why this concert in particular is so special. I assume there's a new song they're playing, but why wouldn't they just play it for us in the basement like they usually did?
The lights dim again, and we watch as the guys come onstage, picking up their instruments. I keep my eyes on Luke, who's wearing his black jeans, as always, and a random Vans shirt and a red flannel. He looks both nervous and excited. He catches my eye for a second and his smile grows wider than it was before. The crowd is cheering, and Luke walks to the microphone and tips it up a little.
"Hello, we are 5 Seconds of Summer, and tonight we will be playing a very special set list. These songs are all dedicated to a certain someone, and are written, mostly, partly, or completely about her. Her name is Olivia, and this is a set list we like to call Olivia." He says. My cheeks grow hot, and Lil teases me, though I can't quite hear her over the noise in the room.
They start with a song I don't know, which is obviously the point. I listen to it carefully, and catch most of the words. It's a song that essentially describes the time that Luke and I took off for the night. During the chorus, I catch on that the song is called "Kiss Me Kiss Me." It's really cute how Luke put in a what we did that night. It makes me smile, and his eyes keep coming back over to mine.
The next song describes our ride home that night. How Green Day was playing and how we kissed at every stoplight. That one is called "Long Way Home." Lil rolls her eyes at me, "This is so cheesy, I feel like we're in a romance novel," she laughs. I push her shoulder with mine lightly, giggling to myself. I think it's adorable. Cheesy, yes. But adorable.
The next two songs are titled "Don't Stop" and "Good Girls." They are basically about that party that I totally teased him at. The memory of the time makes me blush a little. So does the fact that he wrote it all into words, into songs. "Naughty girl," Lil jokingly scolds me.
Next is a song that I do know, Voodoo Doll. The one that Luke made in order to tell me he liked me. It brings back a lot of memories, which seem to be from such a long time ago. The budding love of ours seems to be from forever ago.
The last song is the one that I caught evidence of. It's about various parts of our relationship. When he pushed me in the pool and his mom got me a towel. When I drew an arrowed heart with my name in it on his arm. When he gave me a mixtape. When we had sex. That one gets me red too. It also gets Lil scolding again.
But the best part is that he documented our relationship in the song. Those little words that don't make sense to anyone else. They mean so much to the both of us. I realize that I can't stop grinning.
At the end of the song, Luke looks directly at me, with the biggest smile ever. "That was for Olivia. And even tonight, she looks so perfect."
