"Everything is falling down, we're suffering helpless thoughts and out we sing, prayers go to the sky."
- 5 Seconds of Summer//Gotta Get Out
***
The afternoon was still young when Tia made it back to her two-story household.
She was used to being alone in the darkness and silence, with no one to welcome her home or offer her something to eat. It was a routine; arrive at home and hope for her dad to come back before she fell into her restless sleep.
However, her wish hardly ever came true.
So she trudged through the kitchen, throwed her heavy backpack on the ground, and placed some leftovers into the microwave. All the take-out and pizza she has been ordering for the past few years could not be good for her, yet she made no effort to make it better.
When a beeping shriek echoed across the halls, Tia opened the microwave, the smell of chicken chow mein filling her nose. Chinese food was her absolute favorite.
Making her way up the stairs, she was startled to hear the rumble of the garage door opening. Was her dad home already?
She immediately made a 180 turn, setting the food down, and stumbled down the stairs, sprinting towards the door leading to the garage. She had no idea why she was so eager to see her dad, he was her goddamn father for goodness sake. Most teenagers would be crying at the fact that their parent had come home early.
As she flung open the door, her eyes took a moment to adjust to what they saw.
The car that had drove in was a slightly familiar rusty blue Toyota truck.
The vehicle was a lot dirtier from what she remembered from roughly four years ago. The once antique look it held was replaced by a beat-up and worn down piece of junk. And when it had drove away for what Tia presumed was the last time, the driver was not the same woman that sat in the front seat.
She looked completely different. Her once greasy and uncombed red hair was now placed in a tight bun, without one strand of hair out of place. It was slightly hard to see through the tinted window, but Tia swore she could see makeup caching her eyes and face.
Her mouth dried but she was able to mutter out one coherent word, "Mom?"

"Tia! Why haven't you packed yet? We're leaving this house in half an hour! Do you want us to leave you behind?"
Tia struggled to stop herself from ripping her light brown hair from her hair. "I'm trying! Jesus, just leave me alone, I'm not seven!"
"Don't you use that attitude with me, young lady." Her mother's voice boomed from the stairs below.
That was the last straw for Tia, she kicked her suitcase, not stopping at the searing pain that engulfed her toe. She stomped loudly out of her room, hoping that she seemed pissed enough.
"Would you just be quiet for one second? Stop nagging, it's not making me pack this fucking suitcase any faster!" Tia screamed.
Her mother appeared in front of her, eyes wide and hair disheveled like always. "What did you just say?"
"I said, leave me the fuck alone!" Tia didn't realize that her palms were unnaturally sweaty and her fists were clenched tight, making her knuckles white with annoyance.
