"The punishment for drug possession and drug distribution in Cratia is... mandatory death penalty,"
'Death penalty'
The two words echoed loudly in Jasmine's ears when the lawyer said it to her.
Jasmine felt like her soul had left her body.
She turned her gaze up to look at the big belly man with a receding hairline. The lawyer, Connor Gu, was sent by Joshua to represent Jasmine.
At the airport, when Jasmine's imagination crumbled and reality hit her, she asked if she could make a phone call to her boyfriend. With their permission, Jasmine called Joshua and informed him about her situation.
Jasmine questioned Joshua if he knew anything about the thing that was found in her lingerie bag.
However, Joshua was clueless about what Jasmine was asking him about.
"Babe, aren't you out shopping with Maya the day before and you told me she gave you an early present for our anniversary?" Joshua had asked from the other line.
Jasmine remembered it was Maya's idea to get the sexy lingeries, and Maya had chosen them for her.
On the outside, Jasmine appeared like every other bashful girl when talking about anything related to bedroom activities. She was a conservative.
However, on the inside, she could have the wildest imagination beyond the limit. But she wouldn't let anyone know about her deepest, darkest secret. Over her dead body!
Thus, during their shopping, she let Maya choose the lingerie sets for her. Trusting Maya with the purchases, she swiped her card and brought them back. She didn't open the things that Maya bought for her. She shoved them all inside her lingerie bag.
'Did Maya...' Jasmine felt like she was being stabbed in the back by a friend that she trusted.
Her phone call with Joshua was limited, especially when Joshua's number was an international number.
After the call ended, she was locked behind bars.
Jasmine pulled herself out of that memory at the airport. Her eyes were looking at the lawyer's face.
"Mr Gu, where is Joshua?" she asked.
It has been a few days since she was locked up here. She was waiting for Joshua to come and meet her. He was the only person she could rely on right now.
"Mr Jones had flown back to Alscot to gather proof that could help your case," replied the lawyer.
"What? Joshua had gone back to Alscot, leaving me here alone?" Jasmine asked in an unbelievable tone.
"Ms Paxton, Mr Jones had requested to visit you from the police. However, his request was denied. To not waste time and effort, he decided it was best if he fly back to Alscot," explained Mr. Gu to Jasmine.
Sadness washed over Jasmine. She's alone in a foreign country. A place she had never gone before.
Everything was a mess for her right now.
The day she anticipated had turned into a nightmare for her. Her dreams of seeing the beautiful country of Cratia ended up with her seeing the four walls of the prison cell.
What should she do now?
Her parents...
Jasmine was afraid to call them and told them her situation. How would they react to this?
Scott Paxton, her father, would be disappointed with her. He was a policeman in the narcotics department himself in Alscot. A daughter of a narcotics detective, caught in possession of drugs. How ironic!
'Death penalty'
The words echoed in her mind again.
Jasmine didn't really pay attention to her father's police work. However, as far as she knew, the punishment for drug possession and trafficking wasn't a death penalty in Alscot.
But, she's not in Alscot, but in Cratia! They have different laws!
*Bang!
Jasmine banged her head face down on the table between her and the lawyer.
"Ouch!" she cried out. 'That's more painful than what I thought,' she said inwardly.
Pulling herself back to sit properly, Jasmine looked at the lawyer and asked, "So, what now?"
Mr. Gu extended his hand to hold Jasmine's hand that was on the table, "don't worry Ms Paxton. Leave everything to me," his rough palm caresses Jasmine's smooth skin.
Jasmine pulled her hands from the table in reflex and put them on her lap.
'That's disgusting!' she felt shivered run all throughout her body from the lawyer's touch.
A fire burned inside her. She felt like smacking the lawyer's head, who was now sporting a lustful smile on her. 'I should dig my fingers into his eye sockets and slap that smile out of his face.'
However, since the lawyer was sent by Joshua, Jasmine didn't execute her thoughts. She trusted Joshua had worked hard to find a lawyer for her.
She believed it was not easy for Joshua, since she was a foreigner.
How she wished to ask Joshua to find her another lawyer, however, As she was in a foreign country, she couldn't be demanding.
'Beggars can't be choosers."
'Maybe I will just mention this to Joshua. He wouldn't like another man touching her girlfriend inappropriately, right?'
With that thought in mind, Jasmine sucked a long inhale. She pretended she wasn't disgusted by the lawyer's gesture and flashed a smile to the man. 'We'll see how Joshua will deal with you!'
The lawyer's eyes glint with happiness at seeing Jasmine smiling at him. He released a laugh that made his big belly bounce.
"If... there's nothing more, I should go," said Jasmine, "I need to think about anything that could help with my case. I'll let you know if anything comes up," she added.
Never in Jasmine's life, she thought she would prefer to be locked up in the cell rather than sitting here with the lawyer, discussing how to prove her innocence.
Jasmine dashed to the door and knocked on it a little harder than she should.
A police officer opened the door and let her out. She was brought back to her cell.
Jasmine dragged herself towards the small sink and roughly washed her hands that the lawyer had touched.
Looking at the cell room, a sorrowful feeling emerged in her and her tears slipped out of her eyes.
