It has been months since Jasmine stayed in the prison, and she had observed everything that was going on in the prison.
The Black River Prison was a women's prison. All the inmates were females. However, not everyone in this place was.
There were male guards and male staff working in the office. Other than that, there were also men working in the infirmary.
And to top them all off, the Head Warde of Black River Prison was an old man near retirement, who had worked there for decades.
Other than that, Jasmine also took note of the inmates in that prison.
First, her cellmate, Mama V. When Jasmine first scrutinised the lady, the older woman didn't look like a criminal.
'I know it was prejudiced of me to think,' Jasmine thought. However, the woman really didn't look like she had a bad bone in her body.
Mama V was kind, calm, and collected. Even her voice was soothing to the ears.
Jasmine knew this because she had a hard time falling asleep at night when she first arrived in the prison.
The older lady would come to her bed and pat her to sleep, singing her lullabies.
Jasmine felt weird at first when Mama V sang her nursery rhymes that were popular worldwide. However, Mama V's method was proven useful as Jasmine successfully fell asleep.
Mama V's demeanour and the place didn't match with each other.
Of course, Jasmine was curious as to why Mama V was locked up in this prison, however, she was afraid it would be a sensitive thing to ask.
She was just glad that she had a nice cellmate that didn't give her a hard time.
As for the other inmates in that place, Mama V had warned Jasmine on the first day that some inmates in this place might give Jasmine a hard time or gave her a judging look.
It was because of her citizenship. She wasn't a Cratian.
Keeping that in mind, Jasmine put a strong front when it was time for her to step out of her prison cell.
And true to Mama V's warning, there were people who looked at her with weird eyes. Some showed their clear disdain towards her.
Jasmine didn't mingle with the other inmates and kept to herself.
However, the others didn't have the same thoughts as her.
Without any notice, her hair was roughly pulled when she was sweeping the floor, and her body crashed into a solid wall when she was just walking down the corridor. It happened multiple times.
Jasmine had fought them a few times, however, she was only one person, while the others were in groups.
She had tried calling for help. No one stood up for her, but laughed at her situation. Even the warden turned blind eyes to the inmates' assaults.
After months of being there and new inmates coming, their target changed. The assaults on Jasmine lessen, but not completely gone.
Jasmine had taken notes of different groups in this prison.
There were two major cliques in this prison. The others were just small fries compared to these two groups.
One was a group led by a brash middle-aged lady who was said to be a member of a major gang in Cratia. She goes by the nickname Barbie. Barbie was a muscular lady that looked like she could make you faint with just a punch. And she sure could.
That was why everyone respected her. Or more like afraid of her. With her physique and background, the other inmates preferred to be under her than against her.
As for the other group, it was led by a beautiful young lady in her late twenties. She was an heiress of a rich family. From her style, Jasmine could discern that it was probably true. The lady's name was Olivia Tang.
Everyone was mostly known by their nickname, however, as Olivia was from a wealthy family, it wasn't a secret what her name was.
Olivia had her own followers because of her background and looks too. Money sure talks. People tend to follow those who have money, especially when most people here commit their crimes either for love or money.
After her careful examination of the place, Jasmine concluded who she should keep away from to avoid falling into trouble.
Jasmine was not interested in getting into any of these cliques and she was sure they didn't want her too.
Who wants 'mat salleh' in their gang?
The answer was no one.
'Well, likewise sisters! Who wants to be friends with a bunch of criminals,' Jasmine had said this inwardly.
As Jasmine knew she was innocent, she also looked at them with disdain.
Of course, all of this was just kept inside by Jasmine. She would be dead before the judge could sentence her with the death penalty if she said and showed her thoughts out loud.
However, Jasmine wasn't truly friendless in these four walls.
Jasmine made friends with the people who work in the infirmary, and one of the wardens of that prison.
"Good Morning, Warden Agnes," Jasmine walked inside the library and greeted the warden with a smile
This was where Jasmine befriended the warden, in the library.
Warden Agnes was responsible for looking after the library. More than a warden, she was more like a librarian.
"Good Morning, Jade. You're here," Warden Agnes replied to Jasmine with a small smile.
You heard her right, Warden Agnes called Jasmine with the name 'Jade' because of her green eyes.
Jasmine doesn't have qualms about it. Rather than being called inmate 2306, it was better to be called Jade. It wasn't a bad nickname at all.
The library was Jasmine's favourite place to spend during her free time. It was the place she went to avoid rubbing shoulders with the other inmates.
It was not that there were no inmates here. However, most of them were the same as here who like to keep things to themselves.
Jasmine first went to the library to read the book about Cratia law, to find anything that could help her case.
But when she was tired of reading the legal jargon, she picked up novels and got lost in the world of fantasies and romance.
