I put my put my notebook and pen in my bag, when suddenly there was a stone hitting my window, shocking me. I pressed my face against the glass and saw Gretchen there, she looked nervous and, and tired, as if she's been running, which she has a habit of doing. I didn't know what she was doing here, but she can explain later. I held my hand up, telling her to wait.
I quickly put my shoes on put my coat on not buttoning it up "Daniel where are you-?"
"I need to leave, Aaron can explain" I said as I ran down to meet with Gretchen.
Her eyes started to tear up "Daniel--" she said, but stopped when I wrapped my arms around her.
"Are you alright?" I muttered into her hair.
She nodded slightly "Yes, I'm fine" she said in a shaky voice.
I don't think she's being honest, but we haven't time "I didn't think you were due back in the city for another two days" I stated as I stepped back.Gretchen looked over my shoulder "Are you going somewhere?" she asked.
I smiled "A lot has happened in the past couple of days. I can't take time to explain or I'll miss the night express to Berlin, so I'll ask instead-- do you trust me?" I asked.
"Yes" she said without hesitation.
I kissed her hard and quickly "Then come with me now, and I'll explain everything on the ride" I explained.I did the buttons on my coat while I grabbed bag, Gretchen held my hand as an answer.
We stepped into night and made our way to train station.
There was barely anyone at the central station. We sat in a third class compartment that we had to ourselves. We talked late into the night. I let Gretchen tell me what she was doing here so soon. Gretchens smile slipped, and looked down "At Haus Wachenfeld, Hitlers mountain home, there wasn't much that happened. I asked about Uncle Dolf's boyhood. I found out his mother died when he was 18, when she first got sick, he was living in Vienna with a friend. However, when he was told about his mother's breast cancer he returned home. However, she died. The doctor who looked after her was Jewish, and is known to be Hitlers favoured Jew. He got denied into the art school in Vienna for a second time. He moved to München not too much later. He joined the army as the war started" she said. "Later, I was told he didn't really listen to his mother as a boy, mainly at aged 10 or so. I was also told that he was apparently a terrible hellion, something I don't completely believe, a bit of a stretch. I was told he was the leader in games he'd play with the other village boys, ripping his clothes all the time, nothing to odd. But it's what Frau Raubal told me after, that's more concerning. It started with stilling pears from the neighbour's orchard. He was caught smoking, and he would shoot rats at night in a cemetery close by. Apparently he would laugh while doing so. After I was told all this, I went outside, trying to get some air since the information was suffocating, Geli told me that he hates doctors. I asked to leave to tell you this, but Frau Raubal asked why, I was trying to convince her, saying I remembered something important, but Kurt and my brother showed up at the house, shocking everyone"
I was going to speak, since she looked out the window, but she spoke "They said that I was wanted by Uncle, Herr Hitler, at Braunes Haus. I had no choice but to go. When I got there, only an hour or so go, I was confused, worried that he somehow found out about us, or that I suspected him of something. However, he just wanted to talk, at least at the start. I told him how nice it was at Haus Wachenfeld. But then, then when I addressed him as 'Herr Hitler' he gave me a weird look, I explained that since I'm not a child now, I ought to address him as such, he said he was aware, then looked me up and down, making me uncomfortable. He made stubble gestures, more than a fatherly figure like, more flirty than anything" she said, speaking slowly towards the end.
I noticed her eyes had some tears welling up "He asked to kiss me. I- I couldn't answer. I couldn't say no, he's someone who's hard to say no to, he had a gun with him, so I frightened on what would happen" she said rushed, I was scared now, what if she said yes? "I couldn't say yes either. I couldn't live with myself if I did" she added, very rushed. I noticed a tear go down her cheek "He whipped his hand when I didn't answer, probably knowing my answer was no. He let me leave, and that's when I ran to your apartment" she explained.
