"Herr Cohen please, you ought to go" he said.
I was shocked at his comment "Why is that?" I asked.
The man sighed "I'm sure you've heard about Fräulein Raubal, something bad has happened to the woman. And there's some rumours that someone is after you, I believe it was one or two young SA fellows" he commented.
I shook my head "Figured. It's Gretchens, Fräulein Müllers, brother, he saw us together and ran off, so he and a friend could be looking Gretchen and I" I explained. "Gretchen and I plan to leave soon, for her safety, mainly" I said.Through lots of yelling I heard fast footsteps, I looked to the stairs and saw Gretchen, what on earth she doing here. I still felt a smile on my face, glad she was unhurt. I muttered her name, she came up onto the landing, I noticed her arms twitch, like she was going to throw her arms around me, but didn't, I grabbed her hands "You're all right! I've been looking for you everywhere. There's a rumor going around that Fräulein Raubal is hurt or dead, and I didn't know what happened to you--" I said panicked, glad that she's here.
"There's no time to explain. We have to get out of here--" Gretchen said panicked, I just realised how flushed she looks, her hair was a mess, and she had clearly been rushing around for a while, and I noticed the bike she had ridden here wasn't hers, since she had placed it on the stone block with a lion on it.
"That's what I've been trying to tell Herr Cohen" Gerlich said. "I've heard from one of my sources that Röhm's looking for the Müller brother and sister. I don't see how you can escape this square alive" he said.
I knew he was referring to Gretchen, as she would be the one in more danger, since people recognise her much more than me "I'm not leaving Gretchen." I said sternly, squeezing her hands in mine.
Fear transformed Gerlich normally calm face "Perhaps if you leave separately you'll attract less attention--" Gerlich said."No" I cut in, not wanting to leave Gretchen alone "We escape together." I said sternly.
The shouts from the square had gotten louder, Communists yelling at the brownshirts.
The brownshirts were shifting their wight, one foot to the other. I saw one of the SA men looking around, his eyes locking on Gretchen, the man seemed to recognise Gretchen. He said something to the man next to him. The man looked to Gretchen and nodded. The message was getting passed through the line of brownshirts. If we waited much longer, we would have a bunch of men running at us. We didn't have anywhere to go.
Gerlich frowned at the men "What a mess. Reminds we of the Putsch all over again" he muttered.
I saw some horror flush over Gretchens face, suddenly her face turned into an expression of thought "I know what to do" Gretchen muttered, she said it again loudly. "I know what to do!" She turned to us "We create a riot and flee during the chaos" she said.I didn't know what she was going to do, but I trusted her judgement and nodded. The brownshirts had started to move towards us, the Communist had also noticed us, mainly since the SA had turned their attention from them.
"Goodbye, Herr Gerlich" I said, letting go of Gretchens hands to shake his "We haven't known each other long, but I've learned much from you" I said, thanking the man.
"Stay alive. I shall expect great things from you both" he said stepping back, letting us leave.
Gretchen and I gripped hands, as not to lose each other, I felt my hands start to sweat from nerves., I spoke, trying to keep my voice strong "Here we go" and together we walked down the Feldherrnhalle steps, directly into the waiting crowd.
