"Where is your sister? And Elena?" Rosalie asked as the hybrid left the house. She had expected the blonde to be already waiting in the car alongside Elena, but it was empty. Niklaus unlocked the car and Rosalie quickly got in already shivering from the cold.
"There was a change of plans, my sister will be alright in this pathetic little town for a while. As for Elena, I don't need her, I only need her blood." Niklaus explained as he got into driver's seat.
"What did you tell my mom?" Rosalie asked as she watched the familiar houses go by.
"That you're in boarding school. Happy and safe."
"Thanks." The blonde muttered. "Where are we going?"
"You sure ask a lot of questions." Niklaus stated as they left Mystic Falls. "We're going north, to find werewolves."
"You took me from my home on some weird road trip, don't I get to ask questions?" Rosalie glared at the man beside her.
"You should rest, it's been a long day. We have a long drive a head of us, love." Niklaus eyed the girl gently. She had been through much today and it was his fault.
"Why did you do it?" Rosalie asked avoiding eye contact.
"Do what? You need to be a bit more precise." Rosalie rolled her eyes growing frustrated. He had killed her best friend, but had already forgotten about it.
"Why did you kill Dana?" She glared at him once more.
"Love, enough with the looks. She was collateral damage. When you're as old as me, human lives are quite insignificant."
Rosalie covered herself in the blanket, still shivering. She leaned her head on the window and mumbled. "She wasn't insignificant to me."
When Rosalie awoke again the sky was still dark, the sun was just starting to rise.
"Where are we?" She looked around the car. Niklaus was still sitting beside her and the radio was playing quietly.
"Tennessee." Klaus answered not taking his eyes off the road.
Rosalie was still tangled in the blanket, but she wasn't cold anymore. Her seat was now warm and cozy. One look confirmed that Niklaus had turned on her seat heating while she was asleep.
"Can we get something to eat?" Rosalie looked at Klaus nervously, "You know, silly little humans like me have to eat regularly to survive."
She heard the hybrid chuckle. "We will, love, when we get to the next town, alright?"
Rosalie checked her phone. There were no new messages from her friends, had they even realised Dana was dead yet? Was she still in the gym? Rosalie shuddered at the thought of her friend's body all alone.
She watched the sunrise as she hummed along to the music on the radio. Every now and then a tear drop would meet her cheek when she drifted off, thinking about Dana, but mostly she could push the gruesome thoughts aside.
So she tried to think about other things. Like how she was on this road trip with a dangerous hybrid who didn't value human life. Though for some reason she wasn't as scared of him, if he wanted to he could have killed her already. And if he wanted to kill her, it's not like she could defend herself against him anyway. But last night he had this crazy look in his eyes, now he was calm and collected, even if he was still very arrogant and smug. Probably he had gotten exactly what he wanted last night, without any consequences.
"We're here." The hybrid's voice pulled Rosalie out of her thoughts. The girl glanced out the window. They were on the parking lot of a small diner. As she got out of the car, the hybrid was already standing next to her, his hand on the small of her back, gently but determined as he pushed her inside the small building. He led her to a booth in the back. He was looking at his phone while she was checking out the menu.
She ordered a veggie omelette with a side of hash browns and a green tea. While Niklaus simply ordered coffee. Rosalie looked up from her plate, when she heard a ringing noise. Niklaus quickly lifted the phone to his ear,
"Little sister, I wondered when I'd hear from you." He greeted Rebekah, his dimples showing as he grinned. Rosalie tried to focus on her breakfast, not wanting to be caught spying again.
"Oh, relax. Rebekah, I'll be back for you, don't worry. And besides you can keep Stefan company." He seemingly tried to calm down Rebekah.
"And take care of my doppelgänger and hybrid for me, will you?" Klaus spoke as he hung up the phone. Rosalie looked up from her empty plate.
"Rebekah?" she asked him and eyed the man carefully.
"Yes, she isn't very happy that I left her behind. But I needed a break from her constant whining." Niklaus took another sip of his coffee. "Are you ready to go?"
Rosalie nodded and Niklaus put a few scrunched up dollar bills on the table. As soon as she stood his hand was once again on the small of her back. She was confused when he led her past the car.
"Where are we going?" Rosalie asked looking up at the hybrid.
"Grocery shopping," Niklaus nodded towards the supermarket across the road. "Can't stop to eat three times a day, so we need to get you something eat for the road. Don't want you to starve, do we?"
He grabbed a basket as they entered the store. And while his hand was still on her back, he let her lead the way choosing which snacks she wanted, instead of pushing her around. "How much longer are we gonna be on the road for?"
"Difficult to say, could be a few week, could be a few months. Depends on how fast we find wolves." Niklaus spoke looking through the aisle. Rosalie nodded and grabbed an extra pack of chips. She grabbed some water bottles before heading for the cash registers.
With a bag full of snacks and drinks they returned to the car. Klaus put the bags on the back seat, so Rosalie could reach them and got into the car. The sun was already up in the sky, when they hit the road again.
Rosalie checked her phone again. Her friends' messages had started to pile up.
I miss Dana. How are you holding up?
Where are you? Are you okay?
Just talked to your mom, is it true?
Rosalie tensed in her seat and she bit her lip as she felt another wave of sadness hitting. She had not only lost her best friend, but also was ripped from her support group. Her friends had no clue she left town.
"Are you alright, love?" Niklaus had noticed how Rosalie had started to shift in her seat.
"My friends just found out about Dana." She spoke looking out of the window, remembering she was sat beside her killer. "And they are wondering where I am."
"You won't tell them the truth." Niklaus stated leaving no room for discussions. Rosalie sighed.
"Where did you say the boarding school was again?" The girl asked. She didn't want to lie to her friends, but she couldn't risk pulling them into the mess. She couldn't bare them being hurt or worse. So she texted her friends, that she wouldn't be there this school year, but that hopefully she could come visit soon. She put her phone aside after that, not wanting to read their replies. Instead she turned the radio a little louder and stared at the road ahead.
Happy new year friends!
I hope you had a good time and celebrated with your loved ones and friends.
