Chapter 12: Over My Dead Body

Avery, Hanna, and Spencer are in the interrogation room covered in dirt. The door opens and their shocked to see Detective Wilden. Detective Wilden says, "Did you miss me? This doesn't just look bad, it is bad. Homicide is a capital offense in the state of Pennsylvania and you girls are going down."

12 hours earlier, thegirls go to Dr. Sullivan's address and Spencer's knocking on the door and says,"Dr. Sullivan, are you home?" Emily keeps trying and Dr. Sullivan'snot answering. Hanna says, "She's not here." Spencer picks up thenewspapers on the porch and she says, "Looks like she didn't come homelast night either. She hasn't checked her mail or picked up her papers."Emily says, "Maybe we should call the police." Hanna says, "Andsay what to Officer Garrett when he starts asking us questions?" Spencersays, "Hanna's right. Garrett, Jenna, Ian, Jason, they're all connected,we can't trust any of them. Look, the last time somebody thought she knew who"A" was she got hit by a car. Sorry, Hanna." Emily says,"Okay, so what do we do?" Spencer says, "We go into terror alertred and hope that our phones don't ring." Then Emily's phone rings andSpencer says, "That did not just happen!" Emily smiles and says,"It's Maya." Hanna smiles and says, "Look at you suddenly allhappy." Later, Avery goes to see Ezra and as she goes to walk in, she seesJackie and Ezra drinking coffee and she hears Jackie say, "When I readyour poems, I remember how easy it was for me to fall in love with you."Ezra says, "Jackie, uh... I'm seeing someone." Jackie says, "Ofcourse you are. You're a total catch. I'm sorry I didn't realize that earlier.But I wonder how things would be if we were both single." Ezra says,"Uh, but I'm not, so, uh..." Jackie says, "I know. I get it. Tomoving on." Ezra says, "To... To moving on." Avery's phonebuzzes and she walks away and sets the coffees down and answers the phone tosee a text message from A with a picture of Dr. Sullivan and the messagesays, "She's still alive. --A" Later, all the girlsare at Spencer's, and they are looking at box that says, "Open or shedies." Spencer says, "I walked Toby outside and when I came backinside, it was here." Avery says, "Here, like, in the middle of yourkitchen or here on your porch and you brough it inside?" Spencer says,"I haven't touched it." Hanna says, "Guys, I never told youthis, but... Dr. Sullivan really helped me." Spencer says, "Yeah,that was the reason that we trusted her. She helped us all." Hanna says,"You don't think her ear's in here, do you?" Spencer covers her facedisgusted and says, "Oh! It's a big box for an ear." They then openthe box and there's a message that Avery reads, "'You have until 7pm tosave her. These are my demands.'" Spencer lifts the sheet and there arethree dolls. Hanna says, "Dolls?" Spencer grabs a doll that saysAvery and says, "Okay, I guess this is yours." Avery grabs the dolland pulls the string on the doll, and it says, "Make Jackie go away."Hanna says, "Is there a creepier word than 'creepy?'" Avery grabs theclipped paper that Spencer's holding and she says, "Wait, this is thepaper Jackie's getting published on Theodore... Gericault?" Spencer says,"He's this French painter..." Hanna says, "Who painted..."Spencer says, "Yeah, in a word. But "A" also gave you thisFrench article on Gericault and... it's identical to Jackie's paper. Sheplagiarized this." Hanna grabs her doll and pulls the string, and the dollsays, "Stop the wedding." Spencer then grabs her doll, and it says,"Keep Toby safe." Spencer says, "Oh, my God. Toby was drivinghis truck this morning and his brakes went out. That wasn't an accident, thatwas 'A.'" Emily says, "I didn't get one." Avery looks at Emilyand says, "You've been "A's" target for weeks, Em." Hannasays, "Yeah. Maybe "A's" bored with you. And I mean that as agood thing." Avery wraps her arm around Spencer and says, "If"A" wants to shut me up, she found a way to do it. I mean, we finallytell someone the truth and now Dr. Sullivan's gone. I mean, "A" cando that to anyone that we care about." Hanna says, "So, we do thesethings, and "A" gives her back? Is that what we're supposed tobelieve?" Emily says, "Yeah, I get that this is a game, but... Idon't understand it." Avery looks at Spencer because she's not sayinganything and she says, "Spence." Spencer says, "No, it's brilliant,actually. "A" is being our ultimate frenemy forcing us to get what wewant but knowing that when we do..." Hanna says, "All hell breaksloose." Avery says, "Believe me, I really want to get rid of Jackiebut if I use this to do it Ezra may never forgive me. There's a reason we can'tjust go around telling the truth 'cause it comes back to bite you, hard."Spencer looks at the clock and says, "Okay, we have five hours to obey ourChucky dolls or... I saw "A" push Ian off that bell tower and there wasno hesitation." Hanna says, "Spence, what are you saying?" Averysays, "She's saying that it felt like it was easy for "A" tokill someone." Spencer says, "And I only know one way to keep Tobysafe and that's to keep him away from me." 10 hours in the future whereAvery, Hanna, and Spencer are in the interrogation room. Avery looks at theofficer guarding the room and she says, "Um... I didn't make a call before;I'd like to make it now." The officer walks Avery out the room and takesher to a desk to make a call. Avery dials a number with tears rolling down hercheeks and she says, "I made a terrible mistake, and I need you!" 6hours earlier, Avery goes to see Jackie and she walks up to her office andknocks on the door. Jackie looks up and says, "Looking for Mr. Fitz? Wrongfloor." Avery walks into the room and hands Jackie her unpublished bookand then she hides the article that she plagiarized. Jackie says, "Whoelse knows about this? Does Ezra?" Avery shakes her head and softly says,"No." Jackie says, "What do you want?" Avery says, "Ithink you need to leave Hollis." Jackie says, "Or?" Someonewalks in the room and Avery softly says, "I'm sorry I had to dothis." Avery then walks out of the room and leans against the wall with asigh feeling guilty for what she did. Avery's phone rings and it's Ezra. Averydeclines and walks away.
