Chapter 17: The Blond Leading the Blind

Avery's at Spencer's with the girls drinking coffee in the kitchen when Hanna walks in and says, "I passed your mom heading out." Spencer says, "Then it's go time." Spencer opens her laptop and sticks her hand out and says, "Hanna? Hanna." Hanna then gives Spencer the flash drive and Avery says, "How much did Caleb get?" Hanna says, "I don't know. He said he was up most of the night." Spencer says, "It's not like we expected decrypting files from A's phone was gonna be easy." Emily looks at Hanna and says, "Is Caleb still asking whose phone it is?" Hanna says, "Every chance he gets. And I'm still lying to him." Avery says, "Well, now that we know that it wasn't Lucas, my money's on Officer Garrett in the greenhouse with the cellphone." Emily looks at Avery and says, "But Jenna broke up with Garrett." Avery says, "Yeah, after the Greenhouse." Hanna says, "Look, the point is Caleb is still asking about everything... and it's not safe for him to know the answers. We should just tell him to stop." Spender says, "Let's take a look first." A video plays and Ian says, "Come closer." Alison says, "I know you wanna kiss me." Avery says, "This was all Caleb was able to get?" The video cuts to a different clip and Avery says, "Wait... look. That's Alison's bedroom." Ian pops up and Spencer says, "What's Ian doing there?" Emily says, "What's he doing with that camera?" Avery says, "Oh, my God, he's hiding it. He was recording this secretly." Spencer says, "Wait, recording what?" Then Garrett and Jenna walk in, and Avery says, "What the hell are Jenna and Garrett doing in Alison's bedroom?" Spencer says, "NAT Club field trip? Ian and Garrett are the founding members." Emily says, "The only one missing is--" Emily gets cut off my Garrett saying, "Where's Jason?" Ian says, "He's passed out. A six pack and some weed'll do that to you." Jenna says, "So, why the emergency call?" Ian says, "I just left Alison. I tried to get her to hand over our videos, but she wasn't going for it." Jenna says, "And is that the only thing she wasn't going for?" Ian says, "Look, shut up, Jenna." Garrett says, "Hey, this is your fault, Ian. I knew you'd go too far, and those videos will come back to bite us, that's why I bailed on this messed up club." Ian says, "Oh, yeah? Well, welcome back. Now, help me find them before that bitch shows up." Emily says, "So, Caleb has seen this?" Hanna says, "He couldn't have gotten it off that phone without seeing it. Now you know why I'm freaking out." Avery says, "Yeah, but the closer we get to finding out what really happened--" Hanna cuts Spencer off and says, "The closer Caleb gets to the top of A's hit list. He, she, it, has messed up with all our relationships. Toby, Ezra, Samara." Avery looks back at the laptop and says, "Look." Garrett says, "Check this out." Jenna says, "What is it?" Garrett says, "It's just an old box." Garrett opens the box and says, "That's weird." The video stops and Avery notices the box looks familiar and says, "Wait, that's the box Jason gave me." Hanna says, "Caleb's done. I'm telling him today." Emily says, "So, what does this mean?" Spencer says, "Well, in case we had any doubts the NAT Club, Jenna included was in Rosewood." Avery says, "In Alison's bedroom." Spencer says, "The night Ali was murdered." Later, Avery's in the courtyard with the girls and Spencer tells them about Toby and Avery says, "And he just drove away?" Spencer says, "What else was I supposed to do? I totally shut him down." Avery says, "No, you're protecting somebody that you love. It's kind of romantic." Spencer says, "No, it's the opposite of romantic." Hanna says, "It's safe. That's what all we need to be." Avery says, "Hey, well, at least Toby still wants to talk to you because that was definitely not the case last time I saw Ezra. Which makes me wonder was that the last time I'll ever see him?" Spencer says, "No, Avery." Avery says, "Yeah, how do I know that? He won't see me, he won't talk to me." Emily says, "You just need to give him some time." Avery says, "I gave him time. At the play, him sneaking out the theater? That was time. Now I just really want some answers." Spencer says, "How are you going to?" Emily says, "Without your parents knowing?" Hanna says, "Without "A" knowing?" Avery looks behind Hanna to see Holden. Spencer, Emily and Hanna follow Avery's gaze and Hanna says, "Huh." Emily says, "The beard." Hanna looks at Emily and says, "The what?" Spencer says, "Holden, Avery's beard. It means he'll go out with her but not really out with her because he's not really interested." Hanna says, "I know what it means. He's gay." Avery says, "He's not gay. I've known him since I was 5." Emily says, "He might not have known when he was 5." Spencer says, "Look, has ever tried to kiss you?" Avery says, "No." The three girls all say, "Gay." Avery rolls her eyes and says, "Oh, my God." Avery walks over to Holden, and he says, "Hi." Avery smiles and says, "Hi." Avery sits down next to Holden and says, "So, how's the whole "Reintegration into American Society" thing going?" Holden nods and says, "Okay. You helped, actually." Avery confused and says, "I did? How?" Holden says, "Uh, it's probably better you don't know." Avery says, "Okay." Holden says, "But I owe you one. How's that?" Avery says, "Well, we're still on for tomorrow night, right?" Holden says, "Well, I was counting on it." Avery nods with smile and says, "Good. Yeah, 'cause that'll help me." Holden says, "With your friend who walks out on plays?" Avery says, "Um, I think it's best that you don't know." Holden nods and Avery says, "I'll call you later." Holden says, "I'll answer." Avery gets up and says, "Bye." Avery walks back over to her friends and then she stops and turns around to see Holden checking a girl out and Avery smiles because she was right about Holden not being gay. Later, Avery's in her room with the girls looking at the box of Alison's. Emily says, "In the video, Garrett looked in the box and saw something weird. Wouldn't you like to know what it was?" Hanna says, "No. Look, we've already seen what we needed to see. All of our suspects in the same place at the same time... in Alison's bedroom, talking about how much they hated her. I don't know why we just don't hand the drive over to the police. We should be closing things, not opening." Hanna grabs the doll, and the head opens, and Hannas says, "You guys, there's something in here." Avery grabs the doll and looks inside and says, "What is that?" Avery takes it out and it's a few notes. Avery reads one, "'It's my turn to torture you.'" Spencer says, "Okay, that's creepy." Emily reads one, "'You think you're safe on the outside but you're not when I'm on the inside.'" Spencer reads another one, "'Scared yet? You should be, bitch.'" Hanna says, "These notes are starting to sound familiar." Spencer reads, "'Next time it'll be your face, not this pumpkin.' It looks like it was cut by something." Avery grabs the note and says, "It was. Don't you guys remember?" Spencer says, "Halloween." Flashback to the night of Halloween with Alison, the girls leave Noel's Halloween party and they take a shortcut to Alison's. Avery says, "I've never been this way before." Alison says, "Back alleys and backyards have always been the best way to my house." Hanna looks at Spencer and says, "Your sister and Ian are so cute together. Do you think they'll get married?" Spencer says, "I guess so. They seem perfect for each other." Alison says, "Yeah, perfectly bored." They get to Alison's house only to see Alison's porched trashed with smashed pumpkins and Hanna says, "Ali, someone trashed your porch." Alison says, "What the hell?" They walk up to the porch and see a pumpkin not smashed with a knife through it and at the edge is a note. As Avery goes to grab the knife, Alison beats her and grabs it herself and Avery says, "What does the note say?" Hanna says, "Who did this?" Alison looks at her friends and says, "Jason's beer buddies. Real funny." Spencer says, "I better get going." Avery says, "Yeah, me too." Alison says, "What's the hurry? Let's make it a night of it." Emily says, "It's already been kind of a long night." Alison says, "Look, I'm sorry about the prank. I know I took it too far. Let me make it up to you guys." Flashback over. Avery re-reads the note, "'Next time it'll be your face, not this pumpkin.'" Spencer says, "That was the note that Ali got." Avery flips the note around and says, "This is an invitation from Noel Kahn's Halloween party." Emily says, "As if my memories of that night could get any scarier." Avery flips the note over and peels back the cover to see that the note's from A. Avery says, "Guys, this note is signed by A." Spencer says, "A was after Alison too. Before they were after us."
