Chapter 18: A Kiss Before Lying

Avery's at Spencer's with Emily and Caleb rewatching the video. Garrett says, "Check this out." Jenna says, "What is it?" Garrett says, "It's just some old box. That's weird." Avery says, "Turn the volume up." Emily says, "Can you make the view full screen?" Spencer says, "Maybe make it lighter. The picture seems really dark." Caleb says, "Alright, that's it. I've officially stopped taking requests. Can you guys like back up a little bit?" Spencer says, "We're not even standing that close to you." Caleb looks at Spencer and says, "Really? Then how do I know you had a cheeseburger for lunch?" Spencer backs away and Avery says, "Um, haven't we already seen this before?" Caleb says, "Uh, yeah, but look here." Avery says, "It's the box Jason gave me of Ali's." Spencer says, "I still can't see what's inside of it though." Caleb says, "Just give me a second." Emily's phone rings and she says, "It's Hanna." Emily turns her phone off and Caleb says, "Um, we may be able to get a clear shot if I..." Then Avery's phone rings and it's Hanna. Avery says, "It's Hanna." Avery turns her phone off and Caleb says, "If I play it out frame-by-frame..." Caleb's phone rings and the girls sigh and he hits ignore. Caleb says, "Uh, I-I-I can maybe blow up the image, but then..." Then Spencer's phone rings and Spencer says, "Guess we know who's low man on the totem pole. Yeah. I can't take this anymore." Spencer walks away and answers the phone. Emily accidently breaks a glass and Avery says, "Emily!" Spencer says, "You guys, shut up!" Spencer hangs up and Spencer looks at her friends and says, "You're kidding me." Spencer walks back over and stands next to Caleb and Avery points at Emily and says, "I'm sorry, she was..." Caleb says, "Hey! Ladies." Spencer points and says, "Is that a driver's license?" Caleb zooms in and says, "Yeah." Emily says, "Is that Melissa?" Avery says, "I don't know, it could be Jenna. It's just kind of hard to tell." Caleb says, "Hold on." Caleb zooms even closer, and the picture is of Alison with a brunette wig on. Spencer says, "It's Ali." Emily says, "But Ali already had a fake ID." Avery says, "And it definitely wasn't this one." Spencer says, "Why would she need an ID that didn't even look like her?" After Caleb leaves, Spencer says, "God, it's so weird seeing Ali with dark hair. I can't even look at that anymore." Emily says, "Sorry, guys, I gotta go. I'm meeting up with Maya, but... I'll see you tomorrow?" Avery nods and says, "Bye." Spencer says, "Bye, Em." Emily walks out the door and Avery grabs her phone and gets up and Spencer says, "Wait. Do you have to go too? I was hoping you could sleep over I thought, maybe we could both use the company." Avery says, "I'd like that, but I already make plans with Holden." Spencer says, "Oh, I thought you were only gonna hang out with him so you could see Ezra." Avery says, "Well, I was, but... I don't know we actually started to become friends." Spencer says, "So, have you heard from Ezra?" Avery shakes her head and says, "No, I haven't." Spencer says, "I just, I can't believe that he never showed up and he never called you." Avery nods and says, "Yeah. How about you? Have you talked to Toby?" Spencer shakes her head and softly says, "No." Avery says, "I didn't see his truck outside." Spencer says, "No, I drove it back over to his parents house. I just, you know sat in it for a while and, um... And I listened to the radio." Spencer starts sobbing and Avery pulls and Spencer in for a hug and she says, "I'm so sorry." Spencer cries, "I don't know how you're holding it together." Avery rubs Spencer's back and says, "Believe me, I'm not as put together as I seem." Avery pulls away and Spencer wipes her tears and says, "Okay. You have to tell me the truth. I feel like I'm the reason that we're lying to Hanna. Did I push us into doing this?" Avery shakes her head and says, "No, of course not. There are just certain situations where you have to lie to your friends. Even if you hate doing it." Spencer softly says, "Yeah." Later, Avery's in Ezra's car and he says, "Are you okay?" Avery says, "Yeah, I just... I don't know." Ezra says, "You seem kind of distracted." Avery looks over at Ezra and says, "I am. Look, lying to my parents was one thing but lying to my friends is really hard." Ezra nods and says, "Avery, I'm not asking you to like to your friends." Avery says, "Well, it's not my friends that I don't trust it's... other people. I've been burned before." Ezra says, "I thought you said your mom was warming to the idea of us being a couple." Avery says, "She's thawing." Ezra chuckles and says, "And your dad?" Avery says, "How fast do glaciers melt?" Ezra says, "Not very. That's why they call it the ice age." Avery leans closer to Ezra and says, "Well, you know what that means." Ezra says, "Hmm?" Avery says, "It just means we have to generate more heat." Ezra smiles and Avery kisses Ezra and then pulls away and lays her head on his shoulder. Later, Avery meets up with Holden and they walk over to her dad's car and her dad says, "Hey, guys." They both get in and Avery says, "Hi." Her dad says, "How was the movie?" Holden nods and says, "Great." Avery nods and says, "Good." Byron says, "Oh, you know what, you guys? Can you hang tight for just a sec? I have to get some cash out of the ATM." Avery nods and says, "Okay." Her dad leaves and Avery looks at Holden and says, "I am so sorry." Holden says, "You sure know how to make a guy sweat." Avery says, "No, I know. We tried to take this shortcut, and then we ended up..." Holden says, "Don't worry about it. Okay, so... dinner. You had the vegan pasta with the vegan pesto, and I had linguini with meat sauce." Avery says, "Okay, great. Did we get any sides?" Holden says, "Avery, your dad's not gonna ask if we ordered sides." Avery says, "Oh, trust me, he will. My mom's got him on this low-cholesterol diet and he's living vicariously through everyone else's meals." Holden says, "Okay, then. Uh, vegan garlic bread?" Avery says, "Perfect." Avery looks over to see her dad walking over and she looks back over at Holden and says, "So, are we still on for tomorrow?" Holden says, "Yeah, sure. What?" Avery says, "Oh, I just realized that this will be the third time we've gone out this week. What are people gonna think?" Holden says, "Let's keep 'em guessing." Then her dad gets in, and Avery faces forward and puts on her seatbelt, just as her dad says, "So... What did you guys have for dinner?" Avery smiles at Holden through the rearview mirror and he smiles and shakes his head.
